Although this topic is probably better suited to post-season, next year will be our 100th year in the VFL/AFL. Aside from ourselves, only Carlton & Collingwood have participated in every season since 1908.

Aside from the obvious (a premiership!), does anyone know if the club has anything special planned for 2007?

I know that the club is aware of the 100 years and no doubt will be planning some events starting next year.

Later in 2007 there will be a book put out, by myself, about an oral history of the Richmond Football Club.
That was just a small blatant plug I had to fit in.

Cheers

I thought its 2008 our 100th year.

Its first league game was on May 2, 1908 against Melbourne at Punt Road. The Richmondites won, kicking 8.14 (62) to 7.9 (51).

Any news from the club about this? I thought they might have included something in the membership details, marketing etc. Book yet Rhett?

don't wanna spoil things but we missed a few season because of the world wars...

i do believe there are big plans for our centenary in 2008

No we didn't...other clubs did, but Richmond have never missed a season.

...I think...wish I had my trusty "every game ever played" from 1993 handy...

yes thats right for world war 2, but wasn't the 1941 & 1942 seasons cancelled?

no i just checked the club website... i happily stand corrected

AFL history site has ladders for every year in the world wars...

Geelong didn't compete during a couple of the ww2 years, as far as I recall. But the AFL was definitely still happening despite the wars. The teams were ravaged though...

EDIT: wasn't '42 the year we dedicated ourselves to win the premiership for Bill Cosgrove, but we got done by the Dons? or was that '43?

SECOND EDIT: consider this post made redundant ;)

Hi Rhett,
Still trying to work out how a book serves as an "oral" history.
Does it sing?

Carlton and Collingwood are the other existing clubs that have never missed a season (Fitzroy was the other club to compete in 1916). Won't win us any extra games in 2007 but it's something to be a little bit proud of, like Australia and Greece being the only nations to contest every (Summer) Olympics.
