Richie took another step in his professional development, although most would say he still has a lot of improvement in him to live up to his potential. Bling played some scintillating quarters of footy in 2007, but he will need to work on being more consistent and getting more involved in the game. 2008 should be an exciting season for Richie and us Tiger supporters.

We open up the top 10 with the oft-maligned Greg Tivendale. Greg had a pretty good year in my opinion and his mature body and usually beautiful delivery inside 50 were assets for the side. For a mature midfielder he does need to dominate games a bit more and at the age of 28 his time may be limited.

Will’s return from a major knee injury in 2006 proved better than expected as he managed to shut out some big opponents during the 2007 season. Will showed that he hasn’t lost his closing speed or his great spoiling ability and this was clearly widely recognised when he earned a NAB Rising Star nomination after round 22. More experience and some more muscle will make Will an exciting prospect in a position where the Tigers desperately lack such talent and experience.

Petts continued his improvement and had a solid return for a forward flanker, kicking 37 goals in a team that finished on the bottom of the ladder. A great final game of the season propelled Kayne into the top 10 and his 8th place finish in the PRE Player of the Year. Petts still needs to work on applying a bit more forward pressure, but he has made improvements in this area over 2006 (and there appears to be far less head punching!).

Another Tiger returning from a major injury and Newman stepped right back in like nothing had happened and finished with an extremely impressive 7th place finish in the PRE Player of the Year. Newman provided consistent run off the half back line and surprised us with some bombing goals from outside 50, including a ripper against Fremantle. Newman can only improve after getting a full preseason under his belt and I look forward to his run and guts in the midfield in 2008.

One of the bigger surprises of the year was the consistent form of Jake ‘Riggs’ King after his elevation off the rookie list early in the season. I must admit I was sceptical of his ability to take that step up to AFL level, but his courage, tenacity and hardness at the ball shone through and he managed to play the role of the small back pocket that the Tigers have been missing for some time. It would seem that the PREnders also enjoyed his season by voting him into a solid 6th position in the PRE Player of the Year. His elevation to the senior list in 2008 seems almost certain.

Our current All Australian CHB and former JD Medallist had another consistent year rallying the troops in the backline. Joel managed to play all 22 matches this season and his composure and skill delivering the ball out of defence continued to be a regular feature of his game. His role in our relatively inexperienced backline cannot be undervalued.

Graham Polak had an excellent first season with the Tigers and finished solid 4th place in the PRE Player of the Year after holding second (and briefly first) for much of the season. His uncanny overhead skills were on display for much of the season, before his form tapered off slightly towards the end. Graham looks like he will prove to be an extremely useful recruit and I look forward to seeing him gaining some important roles in the Tigers’ defence in 2008.

After 22 rounds the voters of PRE couldn’t split them. Deledio and Richo tie for 2nd position in the PRE Player of the Year, both on 724 votes. Deledio made up the 3 votes he was trailing after round 21, but couldn’t surpass Richo.

Richo had the quintessential ‘Richo Year’ marked by hard work, sheer brilliance and the regular comical effort. Richo typifies everything that is Richmond and it is clear that this man bleeds yellow and black. His tragic effort in the Dreamtime match to play with a fractured face and almost pull off a remarkable victory was one of the highlights and, paradoxically, lowlights of the season. It seems cruel that 2007 won’t be the year for a Jack Dyer medal due to the brilliance of an obvious, but yet to be named, team-mate. The day that Richo retires will be a sad day in the history of this great club.

After a reasonably slow start to 2007, Lids found his form and played some exciting footy. I don’t think I am as ever as comfortable watching the footy than I am when Lids has possession, as I know that he will dispose of the ball with precision almost every time. He again displayed his great footy-smarts, elite pace and silky skills on both sides. Wallace’s decision to try him as a forward in the latter half of the season, seems to have paid dividends as his overhead strength and kicking for goal have made him a potent force that opposition defenders have to mind closely. 2008 promises to be an exciting year to follow the development of Brett.

Surprise, surprise. The emergence of Axel as an elite midfielder would have to be the highlight of 2007. His dominance in the centre clearances was mirrored by his dominance in the PRE Player of the Year polls. He essentially had the award won by mid-season. To gain some perspective on this, in the PRE Player of the Year awards Foley was voted Best Tiger on Ground 9 times, and in the top 3 Tigers a further 4 times, essentially meaning that he was the dominant Tiger on the ground in over half of the games this season. This from a kid who just turned 22 (today!).

Congratulations on the award Axel and everyone here at PRE look forward to seeing your continued development and midfield dominance in the years to come!

:clap :cupgold :cupgold :clap
