Richo would be a backward step as captain!

Yes the guy wears his heart on his sleeve and hebleeds yellow and black BUT....his hissy fits and tempestuous nature will drag guys down. We have a new era dawning and Richo was a big part of an era noted for failure and pathetic second rate efforts. We need a new captain for a new era....a captain who knows that even second best is not good enough.

Richo would have been ideal 5 year ago... perhaps... but not now... if he was captain material I am sure h would have got the gig years ago.

Time for a new era and new captain to lead the way to 2011.....thats where we need to look.

I agree with some of your reasoning DHN. However I also think it would be good for the young 'uns to see that rewards come for long term effort through adversity. As you say, Richo has busted his nuts for years against all odds (I don't think he's had too many 2nd rate efforts, unlike a lot of others) and I reckon it would be good to reward him.

There's a lot of positives to be learnt from Richo.

I agree, with DHN Richo captain not a good idea.
He puts teammates down too often. Like on Friday night in the last qtr when Kingy kicked it over Richo's head to a leading Lid's.
He was filthy with King until he realised Lid's had it.
Temper tantums is not acceptable for a captain.

I'd rather see something from a Captain than nothing..................................and that's our lot at the moment!

When was the last time he went of his nut?
If it is not going to be RICHO why not let the younger players do it for 2 or 4 weeks at a time.

Bowden to captain next year with a view to giving it to lids, foley or cogs the year after. He has the occasional bad game but is generally a reliable leader anyway. The captaincy would not affect him like it potentially could one of the kids this early on.

We need a captain who has his best football ahead of him, not behind him.

All our recent captains have been on the way down - Johnson, Campbell, Knights. They have all been at the stage of their carreers where it was impossible to lead by example and impossible to take the game by the scruff of the neck. We need someone who's gonna develop and improve as the team does, and to be able to show this on the field. Foley is a very logical candidate at this point in time. Going for Richo, Brown and Bowden, who too are all on the way down is just re-hashing the recent past. Thay won't be physically able to inspire the team on-field.

I agree Harry, would love to see Nath take the 17 gurnsey.

Richoman

Brown, Bowden, Deledio and Foley will all have their supporters but I have absolutely no doubt that Richo should be chosen to lead the Tigers in 2008.
Playing at half forward and with license to run up and down the corridor he will make a fantastic contribution and show by his effort just what is expected of everyone in the yellow and black.

The announcement should be made now to allow everyone to get used to the idea. Browny should be vice captain with Joel as deputy and the others above, together with Coughlan and Simmonds named to the leadership group.

Re: Richoman

Hate it. Hate it an awful lot. Kids are the future! Richo is not, Brown is not, Bowden is not!

Have the kids lead and be supported by the mature guys... I have said it before Kernahan, Hird and Carey were given the task at a very young age and went on to become excellent captains. Time for us to do the same.

Re: Richoman

Like richo a lot, but if a senior is picked, would think browny has the cooler head.

Having said that, DHN has a good point . A youngsta like Lidds could add something for an extended period of time and could be supported by the richos, bowdens ect

I think Richo would be a good captain for say, the next year, then pass on to Delido/Foley. His work this year has really shown he still has a big heart, and hasn't had a tantrum for quite some time. By presenting Sheedy with the jumper last week and the first Richmond player to shake Gherigs hand on Saturday (from what I could see where I was standing anyway) shows where his mind is at anyway. Family member heard him speak earlier in the year at a sportsmans night in the country (and an Essendon supporter at that) and can not speak highly enough of him now. And before this he was a typical Bombers supporter who thought Richo was a big joke. This same person was at the game with us on Saturday and afterwards said that he now has a higher respect for him.

Brown is the obvious choice for captain next year - smart, talented, respected, works hard, always competetive, media savvy - by far the most talented player on our list. He's still got at least 3 years left in him and could mentor Deledio, Foley or whoever on what it takes to be a great captain.

Can't let you away with that. Knights was a general and performing better than our current captain when he fell out of favour with the coach.

I fully agree with that. Richo doesn't do his 'nana anything like he used to and the players have been saying for years that it isn't disruptive. Beyond Richo no-one is a monty for the job. IMO Deledio is natch for the job, but down the track. He needs another year under his belt. And who knows, if Cogs can find form and fitness Lids might have some competition for the job. That speaks volumes about the good years to come where we're not searching for a captain, they're lining up for it!
