2008 draft profiles

I'm happy to take Francis's word for Ziebell's kicking.
I'll have to make sure that very question is asked at the draft night this coming Monday.
Given the unsurety about this draft's top 10 compared to the last few, it should make for a very interesting and informative night.

I've got recordings of his games where he hits every target with relative precision, but one or two others where he's hopeless.

Maybe he's inconsistent, dunno. But if he is, then that's a concern in any case.

Joel Bowden is like that. he can have games when he looks silky and other games where he absolutely burns the ball. Were his miskicks when he was pressured?

There seems to be massive variation on people's opinion on Ziebell, especially his skills by foot. This is an inexact science for sure, but you would think disposal is one of the more self evident variables.
i would agree you you think that but in practice i was noticed that people have yiely different views on what is good disposal and who has it

When I saw him at Cranbourne in the champs, he was on. Bullets over 45-50 to leading targets. I still think the kid makes a damn good footballer. I've said it before, he reminds me of Jimmy Bartel.

Well some people are saying its average (even his coach) but can't say that I noticed anything glaring in the games I've watched him in, but then again its not like I've seen heaps of his footy this year either I have to admit. Maybe only 6 or 7 games.

I've gone very cold on him then.

Have since his poor beep test and VO2 Max Test, but if his Coach is also saying his endurance is average, at that level. That is pretty damning.

Hmm note to self to read that IF this weekend.

Yes, but contrast that game though Pooper with the game at Telstra. He was very average that day imo.

He was average. But if you look at the youtube clip he still would have had 15-20 touches with 2-5 clearances. He is a footballer. Contact onballer who thrives on clearances.

Yup he actually impressed me that day because as soon as he went into the centre Vic Country began to win the clearances. IIRC he personally cleared it 2-3 times as soon as he was moved there.

I think the difference is caused by the speed of the player's decision making.

JON was described as having "freakish skills" before he was drafted.

I actually like Ziebell. Very tough kid. But not 100% sold on his execution and have worries about his pace.

Where is he gonna play (position) at AFL level ?

That’s definitely part of it, but decision making is highly subjective. Players often get called good decision makers because they never turn the ball over, but often they do that by doing high % kicks that have little value.

If you take two players with equal disposal and decision making but if one has the pace to straighten up exiting from contested ball situations then the faster player will be far more effective with his disposal.

I don’t think there are any easy answer to this, it’s just one of those issues that puts the variability into recruiting.
