are international rookie's rookies separate from the 44 man squad?

I had the same query Ian and looked it up.
Yes, as long as they aren't Irish. An agreement between AFL and the GAA prohibits Irish recruits being classed as International Rookies. They must be put on the Rookie List proper (and be counted as such)

excerpt.
International rookies

Rookies are also available to be selected from overseas countries and players on the list do not count towards the salary cap. An example of this are Irish players Colm Begley of the Brisbane Lions and Collingwood players Kevin Dyas and Martin Clarke.

In 2006, the AFL introduced a new scheme where clubs can maintain 2 international rookies (excluding Irish players) outside of the regular rookie list.

Is the draft tat matters the one on the 29th of November or the one in Decemnber? I can't remember ever paying much attention to the date of it.

looking at the entire list theres only 5 or 6 you would sign on for more than 2 or 3 yrs, performance based one yr deals for the majority one thinks.
6 30+ yr olds one yr deals only. no exceptions.

proven quality or half decent footballers. foley deledio cotchin moore newman tuck riewoldt. would offer nothing more than 3 yrs for them and thats being generous.
i think post vickery have to have 2 yr contracts. some of the younger ones who you rate highly you may give two yr contracts to tie them up.

the rest i would not hesitate to say one yr take it or leave it prove your worth and we will give you some longer term secutity.

Would be the situation with most teams.

I could be wrong about this but I think every kid you take in the National Draft has to get two years minimum contract, so that's what Post and Vickery would be on. I don't know if that applies for Hislop, but I'd be surprised if one way or another a two year contract wasn't a condition of drafting him. You can always still delist them though.

i think Pre season draftees can be put on one year deals, and was always of the understanding minimum 2 years for national draftees.

So with that in mind i dont know if a club wanted to give a new draftee 3 years i dont see that being a problem.

Vickery most likley has a 3 year contract, most clubs seem to offer there 1st rounders an extra year.

True, but most clubs play it safe and offer the extra year as a extension at the end of the 1st. No matter how touted a player is (look at Gumbleton) if they get injured or don't put it together they look silly giving 3 years to a unproven talent no matter how much they were hyped.

That's right. Some get confused with payments and contract lengths. There is different minimum payment amounts for different types of players taken in the national draft, but all must be committed to for 2 years financially.

Players who are not first time draft selections, second year players, a rookie or a player promoted from the rookie list must be paid a minimum of $60, 600 plus $2,600 per match played.
