Big Gus Graham was another Tiger who was recovering from injury during much of the 2008 season. After being elevated to the senior list in the off season, Gus played out the season for Coburg. There are still questions over whether Gus has the tools to make it at the next level, but he has certainly put on some size in the last 12 months and he has age on his side.

David was picked up in the 2007 Preseason Draft by the Tigers as a project player. He has demonstrated some freakish pace for a player of his size and if he can get his footy skills up to par we may have a special player. He should have plenty of time up his sleeve to prove his worth.

Cogs again struggled with injury in 2008 this time chronic hamstring problems after his 2 knee reconstructions in the previous seasons. A mid-season trip for specialist treatment in Germany seems to have worked though, as Mark was able to string some games together for Coburg towards the end of the season. Again, time will tell whether he will return to fulfil the infinite promise he showed before being cruelly struck down by injury, but he certainly won’t fail through lack of guts and determination.

Andrew Collins started to show some real class in the Coburg midfield in 2008. Many PREnders were calling for his promotion to debut for Richmond, however he only managed to make it to the level of emergency this season. Hopefully a solid preseason will allow him to make his debut in 2009.

Clayton Collard was rookied by Richmond in 2007 after a year on the Fremantle senior list. After spending much of 2008 playing for the Coburg reserves, Clayton was promoted to the Coburg seniors towards the end of the year and put on some eye catching performances, demonstrating the sort of classy play that you can’t teach. Our lack of a true small crumbing forward should see Clayton earn himself another year on the rookie list if he is not promoted to the senior list.

Travis spent another year battling soft-tissue injury problems and just couldn’t string enough games together to make any claim for a senior debut for Richmond. It must be a concern for him that he just can’t get fit enough to stay on the park and now with the Richmond defence looking more solid and with players like Rance coming through he really needs to stake his claim. He clearly has size and talent and is one of the RFCs young blood-nut brigade, he just needs to have an extended run without injury.

After showing some promising signs lining up in the midfield in the early rounds of the 2008 season Andrew suffered a dislocated knee followed by hamstring problems that limited his contribution to only 2 matches this season. Hopefully an injury-free preseason will see him back to his best in 2009.

Jarrad has managed to bulk up a bit this season, but he still hasn’t managed to make an impact at the senior level, only managing 2 senior appearances. JON played the majority of the season at Coburg, where from all reports he was aggressive and played some good footy. There are still questions over his awareness, peripheral vision and general footy smarts. 2009 will be an important season in determining his future with the RFC.

Tristan managed to make a few senior appearances for Richmond late in the season after being elevated off the rookie list. He was competitive in those appearances, but there are certainly questions over whether he will have a long term position at the Tigers. Ultimately, our poor ruck stocks may play a decisive role in this matter.

After being suspended due to an incident in Richmond’s Round 1 match (which I have a feeling earned him those votes) Cam spent the rest of the season playing for Coburg. He had a solid season in the 2’s but his inability to get promoted off the rookie list and make it back into the Richmond seniors would suggest that he will probably not be around in the Yellow and Black next year.

After playing 22 rounds in 2007 and finishing 8th in the PRE Player of the Year awards, Pettifer struggled to cement a spot in the senior side in 2008. Plough’s focus on tackling and forward pressure during this season as well as the arrival of Mitch Morton appeared to explain the increased pressure on Kayne’s position in the side. A serious ACL injury late in the season while playing for Coburg has further clouded Kayne’s future with the RFC. Time will tell.

Greg was another who struggled to get game time for Richmond as the focus switched well and truly onto getting games into the younger players. To his credit Greg played some dominant footy at Coburg and will certainly be in contention for the Liston Medal this season. Greg played his last game for the RFC in round 22 against Melbourne, and played a solid match, including a characteristic 60+ metre goal with his trusty left foot. Best of luck in your future endeavours Greg.

Dan, another of the Richmond Blood-nut Brigade, managed only another 4 matches this season, after 4 in 2007. Dan plays with a lot of flair and confidence and when he is on song he is one of the more talented players in the side, demonstrating skills that can’t be taught. I would think a bit more discipline and team-oriented play will see Dan play most of the 2009 season for Richmond and his presence will add a lot to the side.

Patto’s votes in the PRE Player of the Year suffered this year with the return from injury of Troy Simmonds. Patto was relegated to the 2nd ruck position, which he toiled admirably in without really shining. You can’t question Patto’s commitment, tank and willingness to work hard, however he will have to show improvement in his ruck work, ability to win the ball around the ground and marking overhead if he is to carve out a long term career at the Tigers.

Chris Hyde managed to play half of the season with Richmond without ever looking like his position was safe. Tivva and Hyde appeared to be contesting for one position for much of the season. Hyde is another that has appeared to have his spot taken by one of the younger brigade and it would seem doubtful that he would be retained by the RFC in 2009.

Dean Polo struggled to make the side after recovering from shoulder surgery in the off-season. He appears to have been categorised as a stopper and was vying for a single spot with Dan Jackson in that role. Chocco Royal’s comments on Polo on SEN this season were enlightening when he commented that Polo had to be at 100% to be competitive at AFL level. There has been some conjecture in the media that Polo’s position at Tigerland may not be certain, but, again, we will have to wait and see.

‘Titch’ Edwards had another good run in 2008 appearing 16 times in the Yellow and Black. He appears to have put on some bulk in the off season, which he needs to continue to work on. He again displayed good evasion and great hands in congestion, but he will need to work on his kicking, especially set shots for goal going forward into 2009. It is a good sign when a player of this quality doesn’t spring to most people’s minds when they think of the RFC midfield.

From early on in the season when Mitch was kicking big bags in the reserves I had the feeling that we had picked up a good one. I was quite surprised to see his lowly finish in the PRE Player of the Year Awards considering the role he played for the team this year. Mitch applies forward pressure, he has an innate goal sense and he looks like a footy player. I think he is going to become a dangerous medium forward for the Tigers in the coming seasons.

Dan Jackson didn’t play as many games in 2008 as he managed in 2007 but, importantly, he finished the season off on a high. He appears to have improved some of his ‘footy smarts’ and combined with his natural size and aggression he should make a useful member of the Blood-nut Brigade in the midfield. Having said that, if Dan is retained for 2009 (he is only a year older than Deledio after all) he will need to cement himself a spot early on.
