Collingwood have been knocking at the gates for some time, without ringing the bell.

Much like the Colliwobbles of the 60s, 70s & 80s.

Collingwood are easy. They lack for genuine midfielders.
Very good flankers, a lack of genuine midfielders.

Strange, actually, that there last premiership side, 1990, their only one in 50 years, had a great set of mids.
Shaw, Francis & Russell - small inside mids
McGuane & Turner - medium inside mids
Millane, Wright & Brown - outside mids

Yet since that 1990 premiership it appears they've forgotten how important Shaw, Francis & Russell were for them.
Don't know why!!!

Their positional depth is as follows:
B Clarke (21,181,34,12) N.Brown (20,195,23,4) Maxwell (25,193,95,23)
Lockyer (29,178,191,111) Reed # (18,192,0,0) Goldsack (21,193,33,4)
HB O'Brien (22,187,60,3) Prestigiacomo (31,193,195,3) Johnson (27,182,171,50)
Toovey (22,189,17,4) Reid (19,195,6,2) Dyas# (21,180,0,0)
Cox (23,188,14,4)
Blight (18,189,0,0)
C Pendlebury (21,190,55,35) Swan (25,185,100,59) Wellingham (20,185,12,4)
Cook (21,186,12,1) Barham (20,181,0,0)
Rounds (18,181,0,0)
Francis# (19,181,0,0)
HF Thomas (21,185,63,52) Cloke (22,196,78,95) Medhurst (27,179,140,240)
Didak (26,184,138,195) Dawes (20,193,6,5) *smile* (20,181,6,4)
Corrie (24,186,53,48) Thoolen (19,196,0,0)
McAffer (21,187,0,0)
McCarthy (19,189,6,3)
F Rocca (31,195,238,411) Anthony (21,192,12,25) Davis (27,177,161,201)
L.Brown (27,194,181,84) Rusling (22,190,17,19) Bennell# (19,174,0,0)
Bryan (27,197,45,19)
R Fraser (27,202,174,143) Shaw (23,184,71,18) O'Bree (30,182,215,80)
Wood (22,204,29,6) Sidebottom (18,184,0,0) Blair# (18,172,0,0)
Keeffe# (18,204,0,0) Beams (19,186,0,0)

Great depth on their flanks.
Again, short for genuine inside midfielders.

The Colliwobbles should have taught them that you CAN'T disguise flankers as genuine midfielders.
But at Collingwood, because they're Collingwood, they reckon they're too smart to learn.

Blair, as a rookie, was a very, very small step in the right direction.

Collingwood, as ever, in the finals but not quite good enough.

Haven't they tried to address some of these issues last trade period?

Pies have looked at rebuilding their spine and now are on the hunt for some talented young mids.

Didak too seems to have made the move from forward to mid and they are looking for Thomas to do the same this season. Whether he can or not is yet to be seen..

They'll certainly finish in the 8 again this season.

Didak and Thomas are outside mids. Really Collingwood should be looking at drafting inside mids with some speed and converting some to flankers, rather than the other way round.

Agree with that but I reckon Didak particularly was very effective on the ball last year. It's great if a forward flank can make the transition ala Ablett jnr.
I guess they'll be hoping Sidebottom and Beams can address some of what you are saying re their drafting.
I think the Pies are building pretty well much as it pains me to say.
