2009 - We are Selling a Home game to Gold Coast

seriously people, with the exception of $400k and that our SEQ supporters will get to see the tigers play for the first time and 2 years, what are the pros in this venture? because i can't see any.

NB: playing one less game at telstra dome has no merit. growing the club has no merit (no new footy supporters up there will choose richmond as their club with CG17 coming). so what other arguments are there?

What are the cons?

yep the club (richmond, victoria 3121) is bigger than the individual, but it appears it's not as big as the almighty $$$

The club and its home ground are actually postcode 3002, East Melbourne.

I barrack for the Tigers because I was born in Richmond (the postcode then was E1 I think) but I don't live there now nor do my grandkids for whom it is planned are now Richmond supporters (they're not quite old enough to understand the ramifications of this :hihi ).

I had a 17 game membership this year and when we played away we reserved our seats through Ticketmaster.

I can't see any disadvantage from this move to me and there's a definite advantage to RFC.

I'll probably spend a few more $s and go to the Carrara game.

What are the cons despite you missing out on one precious reserved seat game?

So the club should forfeit $400,000 for precious people not getting one game to have a reserve seat?

You pay $500 for 17 games reserved seat yes? So if you didn't have a membership for 17 games reserved seats you would pay roughly $40 a game, so around $680 for the year........ looks like your getting a bargain anyway. Plus you get other benefits from the club.

Me thinks people should look for the interest of the club, more than themselves.

However you look at it, we can all agree that selling home games is a short-term fix.

We need to build on our sustainable forms of revenue. I am okay with selling a home game to boost our numbers in 2009, but again this is just a short-term fix while we are developing a more efficient economy for the club.

It is like taking a panadol while you're waiting for the migrane to go away.

Of the last few years we have been playing about 17 in Melb and 5 interstate, prior to that 3 or so years before the best had been 18 played in melb and 4 interstate....

So, if next year we still play 5 interstate (inc the gold coast game) and 17 in Melb, i think all can be pleased with that scenario, we all still watch 17 games in melb, tigers get more exposure and money by playing at GC and everyone is "almost' happy.....

Look i go every week and if the draw came out and worst case we had 16 in melb and 6 interstate, yeah i would feel a bit aggrieved as i luv to watch live footy but if its short term like 2 years and we all know this comp is based on money and growth so i would say id be for it but admittingly only for the short term as stated, well at least supporters in melb will be able to enter an away game as part of their membership....

I will ask i think it was Ian4, if you pay for a 17 game membership with 11 home reserve seating, would they (RFC) still charge you that extra seating for 1 less home game? I dont know so thats why im asking but i would think if a member had a 11 home game reserved seating package, if 1 home game was taken away im sure members wouldnt be paying for that 1 less home game reserve seat?

This is a possibility, so im just gauging some posters thoughts here...lets say that next year we have 11 home games with 9 at the G and 2 at the TD, if 1 game as stated is to be played at the GC, would supporters prefer that the home game taken away with a "reserve seat" be the one at the telstra dome and the substitute entry "away game" be at the MCG?

Still have 9 home games at the G with reserved seating...
1 home game reserve seat at the dome and the substitute entry to the "away game" could be used at the MCG? I think this sounds pretty fair.

According to Caro in todays Age, it will most likely be Melbourne we are playing in Gold Coast.

She also mentioned we are playing Hawks in Tassie first Round of Nab Cup.

According to today's Geelong addy we play the Cats at skilled Round 2.

Would be nice to see the tiger supporters out number the local team fan base.

Yep, we'll fill Carrara with that one ;D Frankly the AFL shoudl have gone the jugular and made it Richmond v Kangaroos and leveraged off whatever support had been created there for the Kangaroos anyway. While they were at it, make it Carlton v Kangaroos and StKilda v Kangaroos :hihi

Grrr

I thought we were supposed to get favours out of the draw? I would have thought avoiding a ground we almost never win at would be at the top of that list.

There is not a ground in the country I hate going to more than that one.

Think Terry got us over the line there at least once in what ..... 3 visits or is it 4. Think it's the team more than the ground we fear....

Richmond CEO Steven Wright answers your questions about Richmond’s involvement with the Gold Coast in the next two seasons.

How many games will Richmond play in Victoria in 2009?
In 2009, Richmond will play a total 17 home and away games in Victoria, the same number as in 2008.

As a ticketed member, how many games will I get access to? Do I get one less game in Victoria?
Richmond standard ticketed members will still get entry into the traditional 11 Melbourne based games. In 2009, they will get access to 9 MCG games (2008 eight) and 2 Telstra Dome games (2008 three). Ten of these games will be home games and the other game will be a replacement (away) game in which Richmond plays at the MCG in lieu of the Gold Coast game. Further details of which game will be the replacement game will be finalised shortly. Subject to ground capacity, Richmond 17 game members will continue to get access to the 17 Victorian games in which Richmond play.

I am a reserved seat member for all Richmond home games. At how many games will I have a reserved seat?
Richmond members will have a reserved seat at 10 home games in Melbourne (8MCG, 2 TD) and access to a reserved area at the MCG for the replacement (away) game. Details of the replacement game and reserved area will be finalised shortly and advised to reserved seat holders asap.

Why did Richmond agree to play one home a year on the Gold Coast for the next two years?
The AFL is now a truly national code. Its expansion plans into the Gold Coast and Western Sydney will further cement the national profile of the game, As a club, we have members, supporters and sponsors who are spread across the entire country with many in Sth East Queensland. This move to play a game on the Gold Coast will give those Richmond members, supporters and sponsors the opportunity to experience their club first hand as well as raise our profile in one of the fastest growing regions of Australia. The financial benefits to be received by the club for playing on the Gold Coast will also provide additional financial security for the club during these difficult economic conditions. It is also anticipated that Carrara, where the Richmond game will be played, will also be the home ground for the new Gold Coast team. Playing this game at Carrara will give our players additional experience on that ground before the Gold Coast team enters the competition.

Is Richmond the only club to play a game on the Gold Coast or play home games interstate?
No not at all. Next year most of the Victorian teams will be playing a home game interstate. Only Collingwood, Essendon and the Kangaroos will not do so. Carlton and St Kilda have also agreed to play a game on the Gold Coast. Unlike some other clubs we will not be playing a home game interstate at the other team’s home ground. Carrara will be a neutral venue.

Will my Adult 11/17 game membership allow me entry into the Cold Coast Game?
Richmond has organised access to a replacement (away) game at the MCG for members in lieu of the Gold Coast game. Ticketed members will have access to that replacement game at the MCG but will not have access to the Gold Coast game. If you would like to attend the Gold Coast game you will need to buy a ticket to that game.

What if I am a country or interstate member and want to attend the Gold Coast game?
As part of your membership you are able to nominate 5 home games you would like to attend. You can choose to nominate the Gold Coast game. All you need to do is call our membership department on 1300 136 605.

Three clubs to make Gold Coast home

| October 17, 2008 04:26pm

CARLTON, St Kilda and Richmond will each play a home game on the Gold Coast in the next two years.

The AFL has convinced the clubs to agree to the move as it looks to establish a fan base in the Gold Coast prior to the league's 17th team entering the competition in 2011.

Victorian-based members of the three clubs will continue to have access to 11 games in Melbourne during the 2009 and 2010 seasons, with free entry to one designated away game each year to compensate for a home game being played on the Gold Coast.

With the Gold Coast bid team, GC17, having presented their final submission to the AFL Commission last October 13, interest in the AFL fixture for next year is building.

If successful in their bid for a licence, the Gold Coast Football Club will manage the AFL games at Carrara, gaining a valuable opportunity to raise funds and strengthen ties with the local business and football community.

The full AFL fixture is due to be completed by the end of October

I hope this helps answer a few questions, queries or suppositions.

Sounds like a good deal - Effectively swapping an interstate game against an interstate team for one against a Melbourne team plus 400K plus sweeteners in the draw from a grateful Uncle Vlad - Someone mentioned down sides but I cant see 'em! (except for feeling uneasy in guiltily dealing with Vlad)

Well the price of a reserved seat hasn't risen. Exactly the same as last year. At least in my category.

My statement reads -

Adult 17 $296 (up from 285)
Social Club 239 (up from 230)
Prem A $196 (Exactly the same as last year)

---------------------
Overall a rise of $20

Better than nothing, though ...

This actually really annoys me. Why can't I have a choice at a Grandstand seat or at the least entry to Carrara?

Are they sending out renewals before the draw has been finalised?

I haven't received a renewal yet.

What away game are we getting as a replacement, mel?

Yeah it seems a bit weird Yinnar. I like to see what games I think I'll get to before I decide which membership option to sign up for.
