Richmond surprised a few with their first selection in the 2010 National Draft but Conca rewarded the faith and played an impressive 17 rounds in his debut season, winning the Best First Year Player award at the Jack Dyer Medal Awards and earning an AFL Rising Star nomination. Most impressively, Conca played much of the season in defense rotating through the midfield, a hard slog for a young player. What most impressed me was the time he appears to have when under pressure and his solid disposal by foot. Although he visibly tired as the season wore on and finally succumbed to injury late in the season, a rest and another preseason should see him improve in 2012. One of the only real disappointing aspects of his season was his inability to kick his first AFL goal, although he did a have a handful of opportunities. With midfield depth one of Richmond’s pressing concerns, Conca is an important player in Richmond’s future and 2012 should see him continue his development in the midfield rotations.

Although Conca won the Best First Year Player Award, it could be argued that Jake Batchelor had a more impressive debut season for the Tigers. Jake played 16 games as a running defender and earned himself an AFL Rising Star nomination in the process. Batchelor was very impressive this season, already sporting a solid physique and clearly showing the ability to read the play, bravery to go when it is his turn and poise to dispose of the ball well, he looks to be an exciting prospect for the Tiger’s defence. Although his season finished prematurely with a shoulder injury, he should be right for a full preseason and continued development in 2012.

The topic of much discussion in recent weeks on PRE, Jacko had an average season by his standards. Playing 21 matches, Jacko started very well, polling solidly in the first three matches of the season before trailing off. Much of the recent debate was sparked by an ordinary performance in round 24 when ill discipline may have cost the team a win. However, I don’t think it is fair to judge a player on a single game and overall Jacko was a contributor in the midfield, although there are obvious areas for improvement. Jackson plays an important role in the side as a defensive midfielder and there are few who play in the guts for Richmond that are as defensively minded. He plays a tough brand of footy, but he is prone to brain fades and not taking the first option when he should. I don’t really see a ready made replacement for Jacko in the midfield, but I do concede that he either needs to improve his decision making or I can see him being overtaken in the coming seasons. It was only two years ago that Dan finished in 3rd place in these awards, so hopefully he can re-discover the form that appeared to elude him in the second half of this season and become a key member of the Richmond midfield and leadership group

Perhaps a tad underrated on PRE, the Richmond skipper had another solid season and continued to inspire as the onfield leader. Newman played his normal sweeping role across halfback and provided leadership in defence and immaculate disposal by foot. Newman has clearly grown in his role as the Richmond captain and I am very comfortable with him maintaining the role for the coming seasons. Although 12th is a relatively low finish in these polls by his standards (only his 2009 season saw a worse finish) this is due to his workman like role and the fact that he did suffer a knee injury during round 18 that prematurely ended his season.

Ah, the mystery that is Shane Tuck. For a player who has consistently finished in the top 5 in the club B&F Tucky struggles for selection and is perennially on the outer. To his credit Tucky worked hard at VFL level, regulary featuring in the best players. After a few sporadic appearances for the senior squad early in the season Tuck only became a regular member in round 18. As is generally the case with Tuck he gave his hard, honest performances in the midfield, providing some strength and steel to the contested possessions as well as his occasional shonky disposals. It is this weakness with disposal, as well as a lack of accountability that appear to be the explanation for his inability to find a regular spot in the senior side. Although an upgrade would be nice, he brings more to the table than most of the other midfielders in his ability to win the contested ball, which frees up players like Cotchin and Martin to utilise their superior skill and decision making. Word is that Tucky will be with us for another season and I think that is good for our midfield depth. His 11th placed finish after only 10 appearances reflects the recognition by the PRE crowd of his contribution.

One of the coups of the offseason, the trading of Andy Collins for Shaun Grigg from Carlton sparked heated discussion on the PRE boards. With the conclusion of the 2011 season, it is clear that Grigg has thus far provided far more for Richmond than Collins has for the Blues. Grigg managed 21 games in his first season for the Tigers and was regularly involved in defence and on the wing. I am not always convinced about Grigg as he appears to have a lackadaisical style making it appear as if he is not giving 100%. I think Grigg has a lot of improvement in him and with improved concentration and application could certainly finish much better than his solid 10th place this year.

2011 saw the arrival of Tyrone Vickery as a legitimate key forward at Richmond. In previous seasons Vickery struggled to impose himself on the contest, however all of that changed in 2011 as he regularly crashed packs, took contested marks inside 50 and converted his chances for goal on a regular occasion (in fact he was the most accurate set shot for goal in the first half of the season). When you consider that Vickery also spent time in the ruck there is huge upside in Ty, with ruckmen that can play as dominant forwards extremely rare in the AFL. With his aggression, ability to cover the ground, nimbleness in traffic and goalkicking abilities Tyrone is one of the most important players on the Tigers list as we develop into a regular finals contender. His 9th place finish is an appropriate award for his excellent season.

The winner of the 2010 award had a quieter season and visibly appeared to labour under some mysterious injury. Despite the reduced raw output of goals, Jack was still a major contributor, kicking the most goals in the team (3rd in the Coleman) and featuring heavily in the goal assists statistic. Although the club was not forthcoming about the nature of Jack’s injuries throughout the season, he was booked in for a number of surgeries at the close of the season to tidy up a few niggles. By all reports these are relatively minor and any impact on his preseason will be negligible. With the midfield improving and a reinvigorated body, 2012 looms as a potentially big year for Jumpin’ Jack as he marshals the Tiger forward line.

One of the real bonuses of 2011 was the return to fitness of the winner of this award in 2007, ‘Axel’ Foley. After a few seasons plagued with injury and only managing 4 games in 2010 (where he still finished in the top 20 in these awards) the fact that Nathan could return to play all 22 matches this season was a pleasant surprise. Although he didn’t always show his customary zip that wasn’t too surprising considering his time on the sidelines. Even with the reduced output Axel still managed to be voted the best Tiger on the ground in two matches (coincidentally both against Melbourne). With a full preseason and the kilometres logged in 2011, the 2012 season should hopefully see him return to his form of old and his rightful position inside the top 5.

When a disgruntled Houli refused to consider re-signing with the Bombers at the end of 2010 under new coach James Hird and expressed his desire to be traded to Richmond it was quite a foreign feeling to Richmond fans. A player wanting to leave their club to play for the Tigers. Of course there was plenty of ground work in play, as well as the chance to feature regularly in the senior, and of course, the financial incentives. Either way, the Bombers refused to trade (or,accurately, refused all offered trades) and we managed to snare Houli in the PSD. As it turns out we got away with a steal. Houli has been one of the more consistent Tigers this season, playing all 22 matches and featuring prominently in his running half back role. He has played mainly as an attacking defenders and set up countless goals through his penetrating kicks into the forward 50. He has also manage to snare some nice long goals himself. Still young, Houli has improved in his hardness at the ball as the season has progressed and now stands as an important part of the Tigers line up in coming years.

What a difference 12 months can make and what a testament Alex Rance is to persistence. If you had told me at the beginning of the season that Rance would finish top 5 in this award this year I would probably have laughed. I all but written him off after last year, believing his footy IQ would never match his bravery and ambition. Thrown to the wolves this year with most of our regular defenders going down with injury, Alex was forced to play full back for most of the season. With the exception of a questionable and hefty suspension Rance played the full season out and in doing so won the award of Most Improved and the Francis Bourke award at the Jack Dyer Medals, high praise. Deservedly so, as he became our number one defender, showing poise (!) and vision to shut down his opponent and turn defence into attack time and time again. Providing further weight to his high finish, he was the only player in the top 10 to play less than 21 games this season. He has earned his top 5 finish this year and hopefully he will find more support in the backline in 2012 as he continues to refine his game.

It is a sure sign that the quality of the side is improving when Brett Deledio’s run of top 2 finishes in the PREmier Fighting Tiger Awards ends. A ‘lowly’ 4th place may suggest that Deledio had a less spectacular season, but a cursory look at his games this season clearly shows that this isn’t the case. His amazing durability continued this season with another 22 games, becoming the youngest Tiger to reach 150 matches along the way. He continued to play mainly off the half back line providing run, good decision making and pinpoint passes into the forward line. Dimma also injected him into the midfield when he needed the alter the momentum of a match, often with the intended effect. Again, Lids made the final 40 of the All Australian side and again, he missed out on final selection. This is despite his statistically better performances than some of those that made the cut. You just get the feeling that when the side starts to play regular finals footy that Lids will suddenly become more visible to the footy press. In light of his contribution in a footy sense and his emerging leadership that became evident when Newman when down injured the talk on PRE of trading Deledio seem all the more ludicrous.

Another of the big improvers in 2011, Robin Nahas became both a damaging midfielder and goal kicker for the Tigers. After a solid first year at the Tigers and top 10 finish in 2009, Nahas’ career was on the line after an inconsistent 2010. It is clear that Nahas was aware that his AFL career was on the line and he obviously put in the hard yards in the preseason to build up his endurance to elite levels and allow himself to impact games more and run out matches. As a result he became one of hte more consistent performers for the Tigers this season, regularly breaking the lines, using his pace to advantage and converting well. With his smaller frame it is clear that Nahas needs to work hard to maintain his condition to continue to be a frontline player for the Tigers and a top 3 finish this year is just reward for his hard work. His recent re-signing with the club is excellent news as we continue to add depth and versatility to our midfield.

In an epic battle to take out 2nd place this year, Dusty triumphed by the slenderest of margins. After debuting in 2010 and finishing in the top 5 in his debut year, the trajectory of Martin has only been up. Managing all 22 games in his second season it is obvious that the RFC has secured a gem. Dusty has already demonstrated that he can match it with the best in the midfield with strength that belies his young age and a thumping, accurate kick. In 2011 his added another string to his bow while playing in the forward line and demonstrated his ability to take a great contested mark and play as a dangerous forward, kicking 33 goals and playing his part in spreading the goal kicking load. His pre-draft assessment that he was “born to play footy” appears to be spot on as his uncanny ability to move in traffic and an innate goal sense have generated comparisons with some of the most elite individuals to have ever played the game. Although he was taken at number 3 in the 2009 draft I doubt many would trade him for any player in the league. I look forward to seeing his further development in what will, remarkably, be only his third season in 2012.

In 2011 we finally saw a glimpse of the potential of the Chimp. After his first full preseason Cotch managed to play all 22 matches of the season and his impact on our midfield was immense. Involved in everything and with unbelievable natural football smarts and vision he was the Tiger’s main extractor and clearance machine. The beauty of Cotch though is that he is just as capable on the outside, with great running ability and good disposal skills. To top it off the Chimp stood in as skipper in the absence of Newman and did so with aplomb, if anything his standard of play lifted and he demonstrated that he is one of the most natural leaders to walk into this club in living memory. We clearly have a skipper-in-waiting when it comes time for Newman to hand over the mantle. Cotch’s season was littered with standout performances, with some of his best games coming in front of the biggest crowds. The Dreamtime match was a standout as he was adjudged best on ground and tallied a season high 236 votes from that game alone. He eclipsed his teammates in this award with tigertrue ranking him in the top 3 Tigers in an amazing 17 games this season. Although clearly the highest, there were many other PREnders that rated him in the top 3 in more than half of the games. A remarkable achievement and a taste for things to come as he continues to develop (remarkable in itself) and play a central role in the Tiger midfield in 2012 and beyond.

Normalised votes are calculated by: (votes accrued per round / the total number of voters for that round) * 100/3 - This means the theoretical maximum a player can get is 100 - ie. if they get 3 votes from every voter in every round.

There were a few differences between the normalised leaderboard and the official standings this year, reflecting some of the close finishes and the voter discrepancy numbers between games.
