It is easy to forget the Alex Rance has only played 66 matches for Richmond and really only established himself in the senior team last season. In that time he has risen to the position of number one defender at the club, receiving the most potent forwards to mind from the opposition each week. His 2012 season started very well with excellent games against Carlton and Collingwood, however as the season progressed Rance’s form started to slide and he was touched up a bit by Pavlich and Petrie in the process. Rance and Grimes appear to have great chemistry when they a playing in defence together and the loss of Grimes made a notable impact to our defence as a whole and to Rance’s personal form as he was charged with shouldering more of the defensive load. With the Chaplin move from Port Adelaide appearing to be a done deal (according to the rumour mill) this will free up Alex to play a more appropriate role as second tall and allow him to provide run out of defence in the coming seasons. His 7th place finish would seem about right considering the vital role he played in the Tiger’s backline in every game this season.

When Steven Morris was picked up for next to nothing from GWS as a mature aged recruit who had played a bit in the SANFL I wondered to myself whether we had selected a player to provide some depth to our defence. The fact that he is two time premiership player and Richmond Best and Fairest winner Kevin Morris’ son was just icing on the cake. In his early hit outs in the preseason competition it was clear that he was brave and desperate, two great qualities in a defender, but there were some questionable disposals that seemed to suggest that he may struggle to get consistent games at AFL level. How wrong that early judgement call was, as Steven went on to win the best first year player award at the club, play 21 games and provide some of the defensive highlights of the season. The early sign of bravery and desperation encapsulate his play and he never gives up in defence. One of my highlights of the season was his first goal in AFL against Hawthorn when he ran from defence baulked a couple of defenders to enter the forward 50 and then coolly slotted the goal. He has been a welcome addition to the Tiger side and the fact that we got him for next to nothing just makes it all the sweeter.

Shaun Grigg is apparently known as ‘The Cheat’ by his teammates due to his outside role and the uncontested possessions he accumulates. In 2012 Grigg played this outside receiver role as well as anyone in the AFL and this was reflected in the statistics where he finished in equal 3rd for average uncontested possessions per game in the AFL behind the Dane/Dayne show at Collingwood. Although he can be jokingly maligned for this role, it is one that requires him to cover enormous amounts of ground to make the space required and he did an excellent job of this, consistently providing a running option for our midfielders to hit up. He has only missed one game since coming across from Carlton and his work this year has been rewarded by this top 5 finish and 11 votes in the Brownlow.

I don’t think any player has made more of an instant impact to the Tigers this season than the big Ivan Maric. There was a huge amount of discussion about his acquisition from Adelaide prior to this season and I think many would have been just happy to have a solid ruckman in the side. Little did we know that Maric would have such an impact and could even be considered unlucky to miss out on an All Australian berth this year. His impact on our midfield has been enormous, winning a high percentage of tap outs and giving the talent at his feet first option. However, it is in his work around the ground, his defensive chop out marks and his occasional stints as a big forward target that we have really seen him shine. It is also fantastic to have a ruckman that revels in the physical side and strikes fear into his opponent through pure physicality and aggression. His 226 votes in the win in round 6 vs Port Adelaide was the highest number accumulated by any player this season. He put in a body of work and there were fears that we may be burning him out, but hopefully the return of Vickery to provide some competitive ruck relief in 2013 should provide him with a lighter workload. For our number one ruckman to secure a top 4 finish in this award is a great achievement.

When Dimma declared that 2012 would see the side selected on merit instead of for development the first player that you knew would benefit would be Shane Tuck. After only appearing in 10 matches in 2011 (and still managing a respectable 11th place in this award), Tucky played in every game of 2012 and provided the hard work and grunt in the midfield that we have all become accustomed to in his game. To add to this, with some rare exceptions, he showed a greater defensive awareness and became a key element in our midfield. He consistently polls well in these awards due to the way he goes about his footy and his regular bouts of leather poisoning. He also appears to accept his role in the side and after being sacrificed in the name of development he can now enjoy his day in the sun. This year’s solid 3rd place finish matches his best ever in this award back in 2008. His recent contract extension is just reward for his effort.

2012 saw another great year from Lids as he moved from his role off the half backline to spend more time in guts. One of Brett’s greatest attributes is that he just never breaks down. Since the day he was drafted he has now play 172 of a possible 176 matches in 8 seasons. That is a truly amazing stat. When you add the fact that he is one of the most naturally talented players on the list you realise how lucky we are to have him in our side. This season we saw what we all knew he had in him, the ability to make a huge impact in the midfield. What Lids brings to the side is blistering pace combined with elite skills on both sides of his body. In the past he had a tendency to drift in and out of matches and although there were a couple of off games this season, he showed more consistency then we have seen throughout his career and had, arguably, his best season yet. He has finally been recognised as an All Australian, a well deserved reward for his consistency and form over a long period of time. His form since this award began is unparalleled, with this year representing his 4th time as runner up to add to his 4th place last year and his win in 2009. At 25 years old, Lids will be at his peak over the next few years as the Tigers make their tilt at a flag.

I arrived in Australia on the 1st October 1982 and didn’t really follow footy until the early 1990s, so I can honestly say that Trent Cotchin is the best player that I have seen live in the Yellow & Black. When you consider the achievements of Cotch at the ripe old age of 22, it is scary to think what he is capable of. Added to that, is the fact that although he has been on the list for 5 years, he has really only completed a single preseason. No other player has made me audibly gasp and grin to myself, but Trent achieves that a few times during a season. His ability to keep his feet, move in traffic, dispose of the ball with multiple tacklers hanging off him and pose a danger when resting as a forward makes him the complete modern footballer. Any debate over who should have been picked where in the 2007 draft should be settled by now. His achievements have been recognised this season by the club, with his second consecutive Jack Dyer Medal, but he has also been recognised by the greater footy community winning his first All Australian selection, winning the Coaches award, winning The Age Footballer of the Year and finishing equal second in the Brownlow with an impressive 26 votes in a side that finished with only 10 wins. His second consecutive victory in the PREmier Fighting Tiger award was never in doubt. Although Lids made a surge at him midseason, getting within 3 votes after round 8, Cotchin responded and for the first time ever a player led this award from round 1 until the end of the season. A hearty congratulations to Cotch for winning this fan-based award and I look forward to seeing him (probably as the skipper of this great club) in 2013 and beyond!

Normalised votes are calculated by: (votes accrued per round / the total number of voters for that round) * 100/3 - This means the theoretical maximum a player can get is 100 - ie. if they get 3 votes from every voter in every round.

There were a few differences between the normalised leaderboard and the official standings this year with players that did well in the second half of the season getting a boost due to the lower voter turnout.

Looking at this table it is clear that the PRE voters had a pretty similar assessment on the players as the coaching staff, especially in the top places. The only real discrepancies were the PRE crowd slightly underrated Dustin Martin (12th in our award vs 10th in the JDM) and Bachar Houli (15th in our award vs 10th in the JDM). We also overrated Foley’s injury interrupted season (8th in our award, 18th in the JDM).

Re: The 2012 PREmier Fighting Tiger Award- THE AWARDS THREAD

Well that wraps up the PREmier Fighting Tiger Awards thread for 2012. Many thanks to the 141 PRE members that contributed to the polls this year.

Congratulations to Cotchin on a well deserved win in 2012!

Like last year, apologies on the delay in posting these awards. Things have been very busy in Panthera-land. I wanted to make sure I had them up before the Grand Final, so, again, I managed to scrape it in.

I’d like to thank those that contributed match reports this year and the many PMs to offer assistance. A special mention to Rosy for drumming up support. I think the variety provided in the match reports from all of the different reporters makes fascinating reading.

As always, feedback, comments and suggestions are appreciated.

It really felt like we let a finals opportunity slip this year, so nothing short of a finals appearance in 2013 should be acceptable! I can’t wait until next March to watch it unfold!

Carn’ the Tiges!

Re: The 2012 PREmier Fighting Tiger Award- THE AWARDS THREAD

Simply awesome thanks Panthera. Amazing effort. The best feature on PRE. It will take me a week or two to digest it all.

It was a very proud moment to stand on the stage and present Panthera with a signed Richmond jumper as a token of appreciation from all of us who appreciate this wonderful thread.

If this goes ahead next year I hope everyone will consider helping out by writing one game preview each for the season. It's too much for Panthera to have to do the votes and write the reports himself.
