2014 trade period thread

Petrenko is not the right style of player to Rookie, for us. We should be looking for a key position defender with a couple of years experience at VFL level (preferably one with a successful AFL club who can not just crack a spot. I do not follow the VFL close enough to know if there is anyone in this category). We were horrible when Rance was out early in the year and outside of those who played we only really have Elton developing as a key position defender. We get two injuries to key position defenders we are not in a good position.

Still going myb friend, if nothing your persistent

So going from investing heavily in youth we are potentially going to have two, maybe three retreads.

Arnott & Thomas. Good grief. How can we invest in youth while doing this?

Retaining Arnot and Thomas is Tea Party conservative.

I can almost stomach Thomas for his poise and hardness, but Arnot totally lacks poise and smarts in tight. He's a sprayer.

Sprayers should be knackered.

By the way we have shown a massive swing in our statements this offseason.

No DH policy. Try and sign Mitch Robinson. The king DH of any DH that has been on a AFL list.

We are investing in youth heavily. Shuffle Arnott on the rookie list next to Thomas to reduce the number of rookies we can take. So we know have a 21 year old who the clud deems not good enough to be on the main list along with a 27 year turning 28.

We will have three rookie picks, one touted as Jared Petrenko who is 24. That would give us two rookies that are new to the system. Maybe three.

We will take four draft picks in the national draft. One more than the minimum. Not exactly going hard.

But we have advertised since the final bounce we are going hard at the national draft. We are going but not hard.

No, we ain't going hard into the ND.

You get the feeling the club is more than happy with it's youthful core.

Faith in the young Turks.

This is also an implied admission that coaching was where we went wrong in 2014, not personnel.

Hence the retention of certain senior players and the strong signs that we will draft more foot soldiers.

We think we have a nucleus, and that the last nine weeks of the season are evidence that we have corrected our structures.

I agree we have a nucleus, but I'd like to see some flair and genuine midfield depth.

I also think our game plan won't change a hell of a lot. If it doesn't we're toast.

We're a happy, satisfied club it seems.

Plenty of satisfaction for a club yet to break top four.

From financials to football I can see a long long list of good decisions being made by the Richmond football club. A club that ten years ago was struggling to strand on its own two feet. Over that time the club has spent its resources wisely, rebuilt a list in severely compromised conditions, paid off its debt, rebuilt punt road from scratch, launched a stand alone team, brought a pride back to the jumper and generally increased its standing in the eyes of the football world. All things promised by RFC and delivered. Be thankful for what we now have and particularly be thankful that we have people including our recruiters who make good decisions. On any measure the trend is up, so why not cut them a little slack on this investing in youth. Surely the task is to build our own, while staying competitive and in the finals. Depth is still an issue for the club and hence the balance between youth and retreads. Lets see how it plays out and the results we get before we start bitching.......

Let's bow our head and give thanks for all that we have received. In the name of the father, the son and the holy spirit. Amen.

Agree Mappa, very nice and impressive transformation from a VFL club essentially (As bombers and Carlscum still are) to becoming what we are today, a very well, community leading, profitably run club/business.

BTW - Carts.. You said you get a feling its an admission that coaching went wrong and not personnel... I would argue the recent appointment of Gerard Murphy would prove otherwise, suggesting it was all about personnel and improving each an every persons ceiling and how they view their ceiling etc..

Agree on Essendon and Carlton TT, we have left them behind.

Gerard Murphy is an intruiging acquisition indeed. Coaching staff stand to benefit also.

Agree this guy is here to challenge each and every individual and team within the club and rightly so. We have no idea of our potential upside as yet

I see where Dan Richardson mentioned Gerard Murphy has experience and a proven track record!
at long last someone with a proven track record
keep those appointments coming tigers
not forgetting chocco of course

Maybe the definition means drafting 4 kids in the ND? We,ve pretty much rookied more experienced guys in the rookie drafts.

Not that intriguing.
Rookie captain, and general lack of on field leadership, has been an issue for some time.
Throw in an inexperienced coaching staff and its unsurprising we have consistently melted in the big games.
Leadership has been a long standing club achilles heel and the only intrigue is its taken the "brains trust" so long to do something about it.

Interesting perception that our coaching group is inexperienced.

Dimma has more than 10 years experience now, the two Mark Williams' , Ross Smith, Greg Mellor are all experienced coaches. Lade also probably 5 years.

Rutten, mcqualter and Bailey are the only inexperienced ones.

Would be interesting to compare to other clubs
