2022 Draft Thread

Any one of the 5 we are now talking about are just as likely to finish in the forward line.
Tall forwards look to be in short supply for clubs which have traded out of the first two rounds.
Don’t mind stocking up with another tall, who has a bit of go about him.
Agree to a point, most of those 5 look better as backs. Miller as a 2nd ruck/forward the exception.

Happy to stock up on a tall, would be more keen on a project forward though

Maybe it will turn out as you suggest but at this stage they could be anything.

Surprised not to see James Van Es in the top 40 odd…..

Was at my local Dan Murphy store and walked past him… good size and with his testing at the combine

Maybe he said in his interview he loves dan murphys?

A very insightful draft preview of the Tiges, seems this Unknown guy is a bit of a wildcard, sounds promising:

Better option would be unknown with our first pick n dodgy leftovers with our second. Just a bit more well rounded position with our selection possibilities

Think Giibcus/Brown/Banks/Sonsie & Clarke would go all top 5 this year.

I dunno about banks yet,

But i agree the other 4 are first round this year.

I dont really buy any notion of wild variability across 100 juniors from year to year,

But there is definately wild variability in their exposure and interpretation from year to year

If we want a certain vfl player our first at 53 is just before Essendon.
Hope he is still there.

I highly doubt that Young will be taken in the ND. If anything he will be a rookie, but I think I'd prefer to go with a project tall, especially defensively.

When you start analysing position type then you can see how these rank orders take shape. For instance, to grab a Coleman medalist you probably need a pick in the top 15, Riewoldt, Lynch, Curnow, McKay, Naughton, Fogarty etc. You may get lucky with a state leaguer like Ben Brown but this is rare. For well rounded mids with good athleticism a top 10 pick is usually required, you can get lucky with a pick in the top 30 but your chances diminish, outside of that it's generally needle in a haystack time, Neale & Sloane type bargains are actually quite rare & I reckon the days of Chris Grant or James Hird type bargains are over, there's simply too much industry knowledge out there now.

Early to call but looking like we reached for Brown at pick 17. Haven’t seen anything to suggest he’s a 150-200 game player. Got a rocket from the coaches in his exit meetings and will need to come back more contested and more competitive
On the other hand Banks coming off no pre season looks very likely to make it. Runs hard, great by foot and smart decision maker. Not sure what he’s like overhead though which would be an added bonus. Don’t think it’s a strength

Agree, but my feeling is there is a bit more to it. Its only based on observation, not data, but I agree that increased recruiting professionalism, (excluding the covid years), have greatly reduced the amount of champions who are drafted outside the top 30. They used to be not uncommon until 2000ish, then rare but regular, but recent years they are very rare.

On the other hand the amount of busts taken in picks 5 to 30 seems to be pretty much stable, unchanged.

Hard to believe on what we have seen that they rated Brown above Sonsie

The busts usually occur with outside midfielders & key position prospects but the reality is these positions require multiple picks to get one hit. This is one reason I usually don't fly with Whitfield types so high & he's actually one of the better examples in terms of on field performance. The biggest Greek tragedies have invariably been the outside mids being selected over the key position prospects or the key position prospects being selected over the blue chip mids. Tough balancing act.

How do you know Brown got a rocket at his exit meeting ?
