2022 Draft Thread

Ryder was drafted at 194cm but grew 3cm, is there any growth left? That would be one question I may ponder. Probably the best example of an undersized ruck making the grade was Jason Blake, 219 games at the Saints & only 189cm. It's defintely possible, Ivan Maric was also drafted at 197cm, he grew another 3cm. Northam is right on the cusp, could be a very astute selection if he grows another 3cm.
Northam measured at 197cm in Shifters article. That puts him at Ryder size. If he grows 2-3cm, he’s a true ruck.

Very interesting.

Early to call but looking like we reached for Brown at pick 17. Haven’t seen anything to suggest he’s a 150-200 game player. Got a rocket from the coaches in his exit meetings and will need to come back more contested and more competitive
On the other hand Banks coming off no pre season looks very likely to make it. Runs hard, great by foot and smart decision maker. Not sure what he’s like overhead though which would be an added bonus. Don’t think it’s a strength
If what you're saying is true, It wouldn't surprise me if he is snatching it so can go to Geelong will find out soon enough.

Same height as Patto when he was drafted, he grew 1cm & was primarily a ruckman. I think for a late pick he's as good as any.

Pretty early to be making a call on Brown v JVR isn’t it ?
It’s more about position played.
If they both end up similar in ability we would have been better off with JVR purely on a needs basis.
On that alone let’s hope Brown turns into a very good player as JVR is tracking that way.

What about Bauer then. You’ve been pumping him up. If he fills that positional need then Brown conceivably becomes the right pick if he also comes through. You and I don’t know what they have in mind on a positional front and it’s all moot anyway until they both start (or don’t start as the case may be) playing senior AFL football and until you see over the years how the list develops out.

I’d have preferred Johnson at the time to be honest, both on talent and a positional needs basis, and I flagged weaknesses with both Brown and Banks last year, but it’s way too early to be making calls on Brown (or Banks) regardless.

We would be frothing like mad if we had a key forward in our twos who was doing this in year one.

Goals of every type possible. Elite prospect.
Pretty solid, some nice work at ground level, best comparison is Oscar Allan, I think the fact he doesn't leap much will make him more a crafty type, not necessarily a power forward. Doesn't have the aerial ability of Jack, I'd also say his kicking seems to lack depth for a key forward, Lemmey probably has a significant advantage in this area. Should do well at AFL level but I'm not sure he's a 60 goal forward, probably has the tools to be a 40 goal player, somewhere in the Chol realm.

Could he be a 2nd ruck? Spell Ryan or Colina as the 1st ruck, plus 25% forward line?
How agile is he?

I don’t understand all the negativity in here. Three flags, just picked up two talented midfielders and everyone wants to keep wallowing in the past. Those picks are history, get over it fellas, all the belly aching and whinging won’t change a thing. There is literally millions of other clubs supporters who would love what we have and yet we continue to carry on like it is still 2004.
Yep. We need to worry about who we have got not who we haven’t got.
I watched a few vfl games live late in the season. Really like both Banks and Brown. Both are clearly very talented footballers and will slot in nicely over the next couple of years. Banks is a natural winger for mine and we have Macca and Marlion both over 30. Brown could be be a winger as well. They both kick the ball really well.

Fair point on Johnston as we definitely needed a pure midfielder or two and we’re lucky that Sonsie fell into our laps at pick 28.
Whilst I’m encouraged by Bauer at this early stage, I’ve also noted that he’s probably not a key forward. See him more as a third tall in the mould of a Gunston type with a bit more aerial flair.
We are definitely still in the hunt for a key power forward.
Goes without saying that the club saw Brown as best available but I’m worried about his lack of physicality. As is the club.
Let’s hope he can turn that side around. Not writing him off

Don’t get sucking into a narrative that Zips created.
He’s not a sook like Tanner Bruen or Ollie Henry

Brown is very talented, skilful and athletic. Just needs to harden up, which is what he's been told.

No way am i suggesting brown is a bust,

But this illustrates how busts happen ....

If you want a player who is athletic, skillful and hard,

Recruit a player who is athletic, skillful,

and hard

Put another way, recruiters could bust less, if they wernt seduced by the flashy.

Harvey Norman sells fuckloads of stainless steel fridges,

When theres better white ones for cheaper

Is that a euphemism for why did we recruit Hopper and Taranto when you already have Graham?

Our style needs competitors. He's an interesting watch if he's not that naturally.

I see shades of Jack, on the video, someone sees shades of David Schrawz. 40 goal kickers are rare, only 16 did it last year.
JVR will be a better footballer than Chol. We never had that type of VFL season from Chol at 19.

At 19 the upside is enormous.

I saw more of Schwarz at junior level than most & I can tell you they are nothing alike, Schwarz had a ridiculously good leap, he was jumping on shoulders and using schoolboys as stepladders like he was auditioning to be the next Jimmy Superfly Snuka . I mentioned it in another thread but he was the best junior tall I have seen in the past 30 years, that includes Buddy who flunked his finals in 2004. Van Rooyen looks good but struggles to get lifted, I wouldn't be putting him in the Riewoldt class either, Jack was also a jumper, so much so he was criticised for being selfish. I'm sure JVR will have a decent career but he seems to have heavy legs, I reckon the best modern day comparison is Tim Membrey, that's no disrespect either, he's one player who has defied his lowish draft standing.
