2024 Draft Thread

Are there any particular prospects we should be watching for the mid season draft? No doubt we will be pick 1. Let's make sure we make the most of that opportunity.
Not sure we've got any vacancies at the moment. We'd have to shift someone on to the long term injury list to even think about it and then we'd have to push an extra delisting at the end of the season to get back to the legal amount of players.

It would be an almighty turnaround in our injury fortunes if we don’t have anyone on the LTI list mid season !

True, but that wouldn't necessarily mean we'd go the mid season draft again. When the list is choccas full it means there'd have to be an extra sacking at the end of the year to bring the list back to the legal amount. There'd be very few promising youngsters would be able to impact the team coming in mid term n someone experienced and capable would most likely be looking for more than 6 months of suck it n see ya later. We're not gunna be looking at contention this year but looking to grow n develop our youngsters so unless we have a massive run of longer term injuries again, I reckon we'd be unlikely to bother this year.

Since before the draft I was very interested in El Noor from our VFL side.
A tallish (192) intercepting half back with good decision-making and a good boot would help to offset the lack of HBF we have atm.
A plug and play with understanding of our defensive set up who could fill in if we lose any of Vlastuin, Banks, Broad, Brown or Tresize.

Of course it is dependent on a vacancy but if any of the above were to be on the LTIL it would be the logical choice.

It will depend on form of those fighting for a list place and whether anyone is burning it up in the lower leagues.

Luke Trainor selection put an end to that imo

Yup - I mean, surely we'll get rid of 2 of Sonsie, Macca, Colina & Dow. And there's always a chance Prestia or Lynch have another injury and decide to give it a rest - though hopefully they both hold up & get to exit on their own terms

We will make that judgement at the time I suspect.

I see it a little differently TM , I think modern medicine is identifying injuries earlier, plus clubs seem to be more careful with their valuable commodities early on now

Yeah, the modern way of monitoring n managing any form of issues is far better than the old suck it up n go harder methods of yesteryear. It's still an issue for all clubs though the amount of youngsters doing their first pre season or two that struggle with training load stress related issues, aside from all of the actual game injury issues.

Still believe they should raise the draft age to 20 and ease the playing loads during their formative years. Many are trying to finish VCE whilst attempting to satisfy local, school, rep and state footballing commitments. They’re over training and not focussing on rehab enough whilst their bodies are still growing.
Think the AFL are worried that they’ll discover woman and booze once they leave school and be lost to the game.
And they’re probably right.

Yep, me too. Someone also floated the idea of round 1 picks being available at 18yo, and all others being at least 19 to allow them the chance to finish their schooling properly

I said the same at a Club80 event a few years ago. Matt Clarke said there was merit in it, Will Thursfield shot me down in flames.

That’d make the ones truly committed to an AFL career easier to identify
