Richmond won their 2nd flag in 3 years and were about to set on an era of a team that played a gamestyle which set a benchmark for other teams in the 80,s and 90,s.....There were so many influential footy figures that cut their teeth in the VFL-AFL who learnt gained their knowledge from their association with the Richmond Football Club of this wonderful era.
Their-in lies the key to awakening the sleeping giant.
Forget about draft picks, trades, specialist coaches, the zone, stoppages, running the lines, getting numbers back and all of that crap.
Get back to wanting to WIN and playing for the JUMPER.....
And taking risks and daring to win.
Its pretty simple really.Kick a bigger score than the opposition.Thats what used to win us flags. ???

In 1979 we won our second flag in 3 years - talk about a revisionist historian! :hihi

You're older than you think nirtro, it was 40 years ago....

There has been a lot of water gone under your bridge Nitro.
That was a great era 67-74.
Will we see anything like that in our lifetime again ?

It is currently 2009.

1969 was 40 years ago.

30 years ago it was 1979 - Carlton beat Collingwood in 1979.

However in 1980 the mighty Tigers returned to the top of the tree by thumping Collingwood in the big one. What a great day.

Excuse me....I know I ahve had a big day but 30 years ago we did NOT win a premiership. I think it was North Melbourne or Hawks win that year. We won our flag in 1980 by a then record margin. The success of the 1980 side was the begining of our slide!
40 years ago we won a flag and the Great Roger Dean held that cup proudly.

Im sorry......it was 40 years ago....bugger me....this is FRIGHTENING......Ive had too much sun I think! :-X

30 years ago Tony Jewell was in the process of crafting a premiership side (1979, finishing 8th from 12 teams) that would kick Collingwood's butt the following season in the GF by a then record margin.

The players would have been working their backsides off on the training track about now and the formula clicked the following year to create one of the finest RFC teams ever. 8)

It seems a long time ago..

I'd love for those days to return as well nitro, the game was uncomplicated and all the players knew the game and knew exactly what they had to do.

You look at a lot of modern day players across all teams and you see a lot of player confusion out there.

Over-coached and over-managed, but that's the way it is with all the extra hangers-on in the footy departments.

It's all about players understanding the message but some of these new whiz-bang coaches get carried away a lot I reckon... footy players aren't rocket scientists, there just footy players.

30 years ago a significant thing happened mid-season which laid the foundation for that 1980 premiership:- K Sheedy retired as a player and became skills coach. I have it from a player at the time who claims the discipline Sheedy instilled carried them through. Significantly the Tigers came home with a wet sail in the second half of 1979 to just miss the finals. Yes, those were the days when real men used to play real football. Not a bunch of pampered brain-dead primadonas trying to play glorified keepings off, ala todays crap.

Not true, although they're not 'rocket scientists' as you say but a lot of footy players are quite well educated these days.
