As we know Phanto does a great job of reviewing the anatomies of past sides and the list developments of present sides. The reviews concentrate on objective criteria such as height , age, experience , however are mostly quantitiative in nature and general statistical guides (which are often very illuminating)
I thiought I'd try a different review, perhaps more subjective, but trying to concentrative on qualitative issues with our list. I group the players as follows
Negating defensive talls
Gaspar, Thursfield, Schulz, (Moore)
Negating defensive smalls
White
Rebound defenders - defenders/ run & carry/finshers
J Bowden, P Bowden, Raines, Newman, JON, Casserley
Midfield extractors
Cogs, Foley, Tuck, (Krak)
Midfield run with players
Johnson, Polo, Tivendale
Midfeld run & carry & finishers
Deledio, Tambling, Hyde, Howat, (Hartigan)
High forwards - or - hff/mids/finishers
Pettifer Brown Meyer
leading fowards
Hughes Limbach (Jackson)
Power Forwards
Richo, Pattison (Mcguane)
Rucks/Utilities
Simmonds, Knobel, Hall, (Graham)
Options as Crumbing forward
Krakour, Foley, Tambling
Players in brackets designated as marginal in that position
Having a look at the list, I dont agree that defensive KPP's are a priority although they need to be addressed. The gaping hole is still in running midfielders, that is where LIds and Tambling really have to step up to match the West Coast and Adelaides of the league. Potential is there but our running midfield still too young and light to match it with the big boys. Probably why Howat made such an impression late in the year - filled a role we couldn't previously cover - a wide player who got the ball and hit targets. There is opportunity to cover this area with moving some young running defenders into the midfield but that's a long term move dependant on teh progress of players like JON, White and Casserley. Raines looks like a possible solution but like Terry I would give him at least another season at half back to establish himself before starting to move him around. perhaps teh odd few minutes in the middle towards the end of the year.
I think we have the hard ball gets covered through our extractors and run with players. also while the quality is still unknown wehave a number of young key forwards coming through Hughes, Pattison , Limbach Mcguane and possibly Schulz. same comments with key defenders Thursfield, Schulz and Moore and possibly JON down the track if he beefs up. Light on on small defenders, if Raines to be eventually moved forward. Meyer may actually fit this role. His use and footy smarts could be handy in starting chains of possession towards goal.
Accordingly areas we need to address is replacing the book ends Gaspar and Richo and in contiuning to recruit fast skilled effective midfielders. I think we need to take another step backwards next year to move one step forward. Accordingly I would suggest the following trades.
1. Tuck to Freo for pick 13 and Polak - makes sense for Freo as Cook and macmanus are aging and arguably tuck is significantly superior to both. Freo have runners in abundance which could work effectively with Tuck. we would suffer short term pain but have Polo, Cogs, Foley who can effectively play the extractor role long term with hopefully young raines working his way to a key midfield role.
2. Krak to Roos for pick 21. Roos may not rate Krak that highly but may be sentimental reason. Also they need a small forward and will have picked up a gun at pick 3. maybe if we throw in pick 42 it will seal the deal.
That would leave us with Polak (young tall) and picks 8,13,21 and 26 in a deep draft.
Would this be reasonable'?
