Very sad. Our footy season is all but over. Sunday does not count, but we will still go.
Every year it seems the season gets shorter, maybe because we go away for 8 weeks.
I was thinking back the other day as to how "going to the footy," has changed. When I first started going to Punt Road and the other grounds in Melbourne, like Arden Street, Collingwood, Essendon, Fitzroy, Geelong, St. Kilda, South Melbourne, and others, I would stand in the outer, often in almost mud, get wet if raining, wear an overcoat and scarf, eat an orange at 3/4 time, rind and all. No plush seats under cover, public toilets of not very hygenic conditions, but how good it all was.
Public transport is how I went, and if a home game then great, because I grew up in Bentleigh, therefore train to Richmond. My membership ticket got me into all grounds where the the Tigers were playing. After the game we could go onto the ground and kick a footy around, trying to emulate Jack Dyer or Mopsy Fraser. Of course getting there a bit early and being on the fence was always a bonus. So close to the players. The scoreboard showed the results of all the other VFL games and the race results.
Then home, buying the Herald on the way, and that night buying the Sporting Globe to read all about our loss or win.
Man, how things have changed.
