A preseseason review of areas that the Tiges need to improve in.

Thank you Phantom for the Stats

While the points made on the thread are all good, I am concerned about the 1%s, tackles and spoils stats at 16th, 16th and 13th. I think grouped it indicates that we are just not getting to the contest when the opposition get the ball, and if we are, we don't have the skill, strength or the gumption to do something when we get there. If anything indicates a lack of pace and/or accountability in a side - this is it.

I have read about players being criicised for laying a lot of tackles indicating a lack of pace and being second to the contest eg "Krack fire up". I think 16th in tackles indicates tat as a team we haven't even got enough pace and stregth to get to the contest and lay an effective tackle.

Hey phantom and DJevv...this is just right for you two.

Are you passionate about football statistics and want to get involved some how?

If you are a budding Dennis Cometti or Graeme Bond we would love to hear from you!!

The Richmond Football Club is looking to recruit a pool of volunteer statisticians for the 2006 season. You will form part of a team responsible for the calling and data-input of player statistics at all Coburg Tigers senior and reserve grade games.

The data recorded at each game plays an important role on match days and is integral in assisting the RFC coaching staff with on-going player development.

When fully trained and competent in utilising the Prowess software, the successful volunteers will be eligible to be rostered to work at Richmond AFL games.

No experience necessary. It is important that you work well in a team, have an eye for detail and a superior level of data entry skills.

Please contact Ryan O’Connor at the Coburg Tigers on 9354 8228 or 0431 366 222 to find out how to get involved

Phanto and others, you are all probably several steps ahead of an amateur footy watcher like me but I was watching the 1st half of our r20 2001 game against WC last night on Fox Footy and a couple of things became clear to me in light of some of the discussion on this thread.

Firstly, I should state that this was the year we made the prelim so these players were in form, regardless of how their entire careers may be measured. Also we were thumping WC at the time of my observation.

I've heard distinction between "blue collar" midfielders (responsible for hard ball gets) and "run and carry" midfielders (handball receives / loose ball gets) who deliver into the f50. I've also noted our current strength in hard ball gets and our lack of effective f50 entries.

In the game I watched we had players such as King and Fleming doing a lot of the close in work. Our past equivalent of Tuck & Coughlan I suppose. They were doing a good job, but you could obviously mount a strong case that the latter are the superior combination.

But the difference is King and Fleming were feeding Knights and Broderick, two impeccable users of the ball. Richo was having a field day with these two parking it on his chest with boring regularity - I love the big fella but I would have kicked a few that day with delivery he was getting. Fast forward to 2005 and who are Tuck & Coughlan dishing it out to - Tivendale & Hyde? Hardly blokes with the necessary poise to engineer successful and creative f50 entries with any regularity.

It heartened me that under TW we have been drafting to address this. I imagined Tucky, Cogs & maybe Foley feeding off to Lids, Bling, Meyer, JON etc in the years to come. If the midfield is the engine room then I reckon our footy dept are doing everything they can to get it fixed.

Hopefully, big Richo can hang around long enough to reap some of the benefits.

You know DDT I probably would do this if:

1. I had the time
2. I lived in Melbourne. :hihi :hihi :hihi

The reason for all these stats is that it is the holidays and I've time on my hands. I always find it amazing what insights you can get using a column of figures and a spreadsheet !

Go Tiges
