A preseseason review of areas that the Tiges need to improve in.
(Not a bad idea as we enter a new year of preseason.)

From Prowess, how the Tiges related to other teams in the major KPIs.
1. Total Disposals, 6th/16, the top disposal winners, Bulldogs & Hawthorn were around us on the ladder so this area isn't a worry.
2. Total Kicks, 9th of 16, average, again not showing much.
3. Total Handballs, 4th of 16, marginal affect on our ladder position.
4. Total Marks, 7th of 16, we seem to be average markers.
5. Contested marks, 2nd of 16, which indicates that we may not be taking enough uncontested marks, or that it may be a cosequence of our higher than average handballing.
6. Total Ball Gets, 8th of 16, only average.
7. Contested Ball Gets, 1st of 16, no problem with us being able to get the ball up close.
8. Uncontested Ball Gets, 14th of 16, a real problem for us being clearly 1st to the ball in an open situation.
9. Inside 50m, 6th of 16, better then most.
10. Marks Inside 50, 6th of 16, on the ladder of aggregates about average with 13/gm.
11. Best Scoring Offence, 12th of 16, we just don't take enough advantage of our Inside 50s.
12. Conversion of Shots at Goal, 10th of 16, average at 54%.
The last few KPIs might suggest that we go short when Inside 50 causing inefficiency.
13. Coast to coast, 8th of 16, we take the ball from one end to the other at an average rate. Certainly room for improvement.
14. Scoring from Centre Bounces, 15th of 16, although we may be 1st in Contested Ball Gets, we don't seem to get Clear Disposal out of the Centre that results in a goal.
Do we lack sheer pace in the centre to clear the ball?
Do our blockers offer enough protection for our Centre Clearers?
Do our Centre Clearers clear accurately enough?
(Interesting issue considering we've just reminisced about Geoff Raines.)
15. Scoring from Ball Ups, 5th of 16, we are doing OK here.
16. Scoring from Throw Ins, 14th of 16, we need alot of practise here.
17. Hit Outs, 5th of 16, no problems here.
18. Centre Bounce Hit Outs, 3rd of 16, again no problem.
19. Throw In Hit Outs, 4th of 16, again no problem.
20. Ball Up Hit Outs, 8th of 16, average. (Not hurting Ball Up Clearances #23 nor Scoring From Ball Ups #15.)
21. Total Clearances, 5th of 16, pretty good.
22. Centre Bounce Clearances, 11th of 16, tells us that although we may be getting 1st hands on the pill, we seem not to be clearing it out of the centre effectively. So we need to work on clearing the ball out effectively, once we've gained possession.
23. Ball Up Clearances, 2nd of 16, no problems there.
24. Throw In Clearances, 2nd of 16, no problems in Clearing from Throw Ins, but Scoring From Throw Ins is poor.
Are we disposing of the ball efficiently from Throw Ins?
Are we taking the correct options at Throw Ins?
Seems a serious matter for consideration.
25. Best Defence (Points Agnst), 10th of 16, below improvement.
26. Tackles, 16th of 16, demands immediate action.
27. 1%ers, 15th of 16, again demands immediate improvement.
28. Spoils, 13th of 16, again demands immediate improvement.
29. Free Kicks, 1st of 16, umps seem to be looking after us,
Or are other teams deliberately giving away free kicks against us to slow us down, as we did to other clubs in the early 1980s? (Note Sydney give away most free kicks.)
30. Handling errors, 7th of 16, about average.
So, to me it seems that the major area for us to improve is in 2 areas:
1. Effective Clearance from both Centre Bounces and Throw Ins that result in Scores.
2. The Hard areas such as Tackles, Spoils & 1%ers. (1%ers includes Shepherds.)
From this 2nd area, it has been my thought for some time that by choosing a 'Zone Defence', rather than 'Man On Man' defence, we don't put teams under enough pressure when our opponents have the ball.
Our better opponents may resort to zone defences whilst playing us, but my hunch is that opposition coaches rest their players against us and only resort to 'Man On Man' when they want to take us out of the game.
My hunch only.
Our areas to improve:
Uncontested Ball Gets
Best Scoring Offence
Centre Bounce Clearances
Scoring from Centre Bounces
Scoring from Throw Ins
Best Defence (Points Agnst)
Tackles
1%ers (includes Shepherds)
Spoils
All those things that Tony Jewell worked on in 1979 & 1980.
