A simple training drill

So Blade says we're weak mentally and have a poor culture after a game where we were outmuscled from go to whoa. Well, here's a simple drill that might help to change that culture.

Name, Shame and Slay 'em
Each week the coaching panel determines the five or six players who shirked the contest or whose tackles didn't stick. Name them and shame them. Then subject them to a form of British Bulldog where they have to "run and carry" a ball through a gauntlet formed by the rest of the team. Let them get bashed and crashed a dozen times and see how they respond the following week.

And if they find themselves again among the dirty half-dozen they'd have to follow another round of Name, Shame and Slay 'em followed by a few bouts in the boxing ring and a trip to Coburg.

That might smarten a few of them up.

Alternative suggestions are welcome as long as they comply with the Geneva Convention and the ethical treatment of laboratory animals.

Do any of the players know what it means to protect the player with the ball?
What about some shepherding drills

this is by far the no. 1 issue. imo a lack of shepherding is a sign of selfishness

After this weeks game, there would be almost the entire team lining up to run through the gauntlet yet there would be no one to form the gauntlet at all. Perhaps Tambling, Cousins, Lids & King could be the gauntlet, however as good as they are, there's not much punishment in that.

Did you see Matt White just let the Sydney player cruise pass him to tackle Tambling near the boundary line in the back pocket? It was the weakest most selfish thing I have ever seen on the footy field, he almost made a path or the player to get through.

I also saw Edwards try to run with the ball through Centre Half Back and there were 4 RFC players around him not one of them tried to protect him.
They just let the Swans tackle him :pullhair :fire

This is the biggest problem with our club. The one block I saw for the enitre day was put on by McMahon who basically went down as soon as Goodes looked at him. The intent must be acknowledged though I think. Where is the speed of White, Tambling, Lids, Morton, and Edwards when it comes to Tackling and pressure. Nahas, the lightest player in AFL is just about our most prolific tackler.

The week before 4 Melbourne players were having a go at Hislop while three of his team "mates" stood by and watched them do it. To many blokes observing the games trying to get kicks.

Yep Sydney gave us a football lesson in team based footy yesterday.
They simply wanted to win far more than we did and tackled and did the 1%s far better than us all day.

Must be said though many of our players are coming towards the end of a long, yet another unfruitful season and Sydney had the Mickey O factor plus they are still in the hunt.

No surprise really.

Nope plus we have to remember they are the team that almost beat The Aints the previous week. They've been poor for a lot of the year but when inspired they can still play very good footy.

Yep, was a standout. HE assumed it was going out, stopped even watching. A bloke with his limted ability has to stay ON the whole time, no relaxing for him.
HE should be dropped on that evidence alone

Don't let one error cloud your judgement Chocco.

Whitey has been one of our most team oriented players and that why is he still getting a game.

6 tackles against the Swans shows that he is not a selfish player.

Right up there in the club tackle count also shows where Whitey's heart is.

The Tambling thing looked bad in isolation but look at the whole picture.

What a tosser?

Do you support Richmond or not?

Do any of you tossers know how to support a club that is down?

Bit harsh mate. I pay my membership, i donate to the club and all i ask is that they do the things that even plebs like me could do on the footy field.

I have been whinging about this since I came to these forums. Nothing seems to change. Whilst its good Rawlings has stated the truth, its just not enough. We will always fail as a club until we do the team things and put ourselves on the line each and every contest.

Hypoxic, he let himself down there. As i said he can't afford to do so because he is very limited as a footballer. I agree he is normally good at those things - relatively good anyway.

Unfortunatley we need players with more ability than he has. You could grab any fit quick player from the suburbs who will chase and tackle, if you are saying that is enough on its own - it is not.

We need more players with better abilty than he has, regardless of how good a bloke he is.

WTF Have you been rejected by your seeing eye dog or something?

I love your passion Kingy but if you COULD do it then you would be on an AFL list.

Our players are on the Tiger list because they have shown experts that they can do it.

They need to get a hell of a lot better at doing it going on yesterday's effort, but they have the ability and as they grow and develop they will do it more consistently.

Do the supporters have the ability to stick fat and actually SUPPORT them, instead of constantly KNOCKING them?

We all deplore the bloke that spat on Spud, but some of the crap that is being posted lately is just as bad.
