A thread for those looking to next year

Sadly I am one!

What have we really uncovered?

Raines
Polo
Foley
Tambling

What has shown some hope?

Meyer
Pattison
Howat
Schulz

What are we not deciding on yet or is undecided?

Roach (good early)
Jackson
Thursfield (good early)
Hartigan (very likely)
White

Who stepped up?

P Bowden
Pettifer
Simmonds

Who stepped down?

Tivendale (maybe, his role changed a bit)
Chaffey
Stafford
Knobel

Who starred?

J Bowden
Simmonds

My quick assessment is that we have had only two stars this year, in the whole team, and that in terms of real discoveries since last year, we have only four clear ones, despite all the talk of the 'kids'.

More recruiting anyone?

(please note the thread heading, don't bother bagging me for starting my review a little early :) )

Recruiting should never stop.
New stars should always be unearthed.

This was Brisbane circa 1998, it was from a thread I posted 12 months ago.

1. Hard to believe this list won the 1st of 3 premierships only 3 years later.
2. Alot of the young kids didn't make it.
3. The core of this list seems to be 21-22yo in 1998.
4. Our core seems to be 18-20yo, so we look to be about 5 years off.

The club should always be striving to create new champions.

A very good reminder, CMT.
Well done.

So hard to avoid the sexy option though isn't it?!  Still, that's what they get paid the big bucks to do.

So strange that the rational part of me knows we should be steering clear of Aka, but some evil voice in the darkest recesses of the mind keeps screaming that I'd love to see him in a Tiger jumper!

Or were we talking about Paul Hudson then ... or Mark Graham ... oh it just goes on.

If there are going to be rules changes to deal with flooding/pace of the game/kicking backwards etc...what will they be, how will they effect the game, and therefore what kinds of players are going to be advantaged?

These sorts of things need to be thought through now, pre-draft.

I, of course, know the answers to these questions, but I'm not telling ;)

But you've got to admit, Akermanis is different to Cameron, Hudson, Sziller and the like. He is far better than those 3!

i have leppitch and bradshaw at 191 cm which makes them genuine talls.in the next 2 yrs they added brown charman michael. what a great spine mathews built, for that matter what great tall options he had.full forward line of bradshaw lynch chf brown chb leppa fb michael he also had white and pike who played as third tall options pikey was no midget at 189 95kg. he then had a ruck battery of charman keating and mcdonald. they never had great depth and brissie were lucky in the main when it came to injuries concerning their big blokes except their ruckmen of course.
to win a gf i think its a must to have quality in all areas of the game. you will never win a gf without quality kpp especially defenders.

Agreed Clawsy, what the Eagles would give or what the Crows would give for a J Brown or even a Fevola, tis a scary thought, how good these sides would be with such a spearhead on the end of their skilled midfielders.

i heard the freo coach on SEN this afternoon and he made a few interesting points. one thing he stated was that players reach their peak between 25-30 (and his group is approaching that age). the brisbane and sydney teams hold true to that. if you go by that logic we sure are 5 years away...

you can argue sydney don't have many kp backman. as Ghost of Punt Road says, you need to draft footballers who will adapt for modern footy. i think modern footy is moving away from traditional kpp's. if you're gonna draft height, they need speed as well...

Thursfield (good early)

Give me a break already. He had an injury which put him out for the bloody season. He has shown enough to me that he will be a good player.

last yr sydney had 16 genuine talls on their list plus another 5 on their rookie list.

how many of them were backman? and how many of them played in the premiership?
4 and then add leaping leo. also had vogels who played last 10 or 12 games played in qualifying final and was unlucky to miss gf. will say im drawing a long bow with 2 dempster and kenneally although i think dempster will make kpp in time.

I DO like the cut of his jib, but really, how can a six game player be considered to have an established future? Jason Cloke played his whole first year really well, but even that didn't show what his long term potential was.

He’s tall, he can play down back and his name isn’t Ray. I’m sold.
