PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

One always has to be careful of what one wishes for. To all those begging for the selection of Cousins in today's draft, need to remember a few things. Firstly, he has not played for 2 years and now is 30 years of age...31 next year. When he last played for West Coast he was part of a very talented group of players, not a team of upcoming youngsters. He has had injury problems.

Irrespective, it appears from the news today, the Board have decided to pick him. I have no doubt that if he fails to fire, drug offends again, gets caught with shady characters, those calling for his selection will be the first baying for blood.

Wishes can so only be an illusion and turn to dust so easily. I have argued for his non selection, giving my reasons, but looks like I am in the minority. I'm sure the protestors are only looking for short term gain, hoping against hope he will provide the spark to get us into finals contention in 2009. This may or not happen, but for me, I would have much preferred to pick an up and coming youngster, looking to the future. I also believe we have the talent already to make finals next year without the risks of the upcoming circus which will invarariably surround Cousins for the whole season. The media will ensure the focus is taken away from our on field performances and focus on Ben, his attitudes, ability, and anything else they can think of, to the detriment of the rest of the team.

Having had my last say on the subject, I will now expect to constantly read and hear daily of the Ben Cousins saga.
