Even though Im one-eyed and BLEED the black and yellow....there are times one likes to step back a little and just appreciate certain opposition players....

After wathching the Impishdees the other nite....Russell Robertson is an example that Id luv a few of me tiges to follow....for a while I thought that he waz a showpony.....always goin the speccy with reckless abandon....but I reckon but the last year or so...he has really gone to another level....and even when the Dess fell into a heap a bit....Robbo still stood up...flyin the flag and playing for his jumper....and he was a matchwinner the other night.......good luck to him.....i reckon......... ;D

P.S......He can play good guitar and he really sings well too.... :clap

I reckon he's still a showpony/germ. He gets away with these pansy dives. The umpires love it... >:(
He can kick the footy though. Knows when to stay down and knows when to get high. And his speed and size allow him to play as a leading forward and as a small. Handy pansy. ;D

But he totally murdered Desire. :P

This guy is a good player but I'm not too worried he's at another club.Theres something about him I'm not convinced about.

Yep, reminds me very much of Brett Allison who played at North in the 90s.

I see Danny Meyer being a similar sort of player. Not such a big possession getter, but certainly can do the spectacular.

Well, he could as a junior.

Currently, yes. But my guess, at 27yo, he is now in his last season of his peak. From 28yo his body will start failing him. Especially trying to take those speccies.

Agree Leysey. I rate him and he'd sure have been welcome up forward for any time during the last few years. He's gone from being a show pony to a very good player.

maybe he will maybe he wont Phanto, players arent robots some finish quicker than others, though if you were looking at a graph of Robbo's career he has been on an upward curve the whole time & you cant ask any more than that.

Robbo played a great game and is very hard to stop when his confidence is up.

Their best player for mine was Aaron Davey. He is a class act. The sort of player I hope Richard Tambling turns out to be for us.

Davey turns 23 y.o. in 3 months time, so he is more than 3 years older than Tambo..... which helps put into perspective what we ought to expect from Tambo in time but not necessarily for a while yet.

Well said, Hayfever.

I reckon Russ Robertson is the perfect third forward and his best footy is still ahead of him.

Great post Hayfever. Davey is pure class on the football field.

Good measuring stick for Tambo and good guide lines.

The thing about Robertson is that you worry about him. He can kick a goal. He can turn a game. But he can implode.

He's a talented player but his strength is not his overhead marking. That's his Achilles' heel.

He has brilliant speed. Electric. His ground skills are good and he can weave, turn and use. He is bloody nimble. And he's getting smarter. To defend him, you play a small on him. Not a tall. Nobody is doing this but it's the key to him. The rider is that because Robertson is massively strong at the ball (speed and mass) you gotta play a strong tackler on him. But IMO speed and agility are more important.

If you can go with him on the lead, he'll spill it. He's going too fast. Then he'll get frustrated. Then he'll start flying for speccies, climbing all over Yze and Neitz. Then they'll get frustrated. The forward line is in disarray. The old Robertson meltdown. At least that's what used to happen.

That's why Neale moved him up the park in 2004. To polish his ground game and to take him out of speccie town. I don't recall him imploding in 2005. But nobody played a quick small on him which would tempt them to play him closer to goal. He seldom takes conventional overhead marks. It's on the lead or the speccie. The size of the opponent is usually irrelevant in each case. The best way to match him up is with a small.

There's one other aspect (the main one) of Robbo's game that makes him hard to match up. He's improving. Gold.

Seems to be the same scenario with Richo.

It may also beg the same solution.
