A question I hope someone can answer. Is this the first time that a Grand Final crowd hasn't been the biggest crowd of the year? Last weeks prelim drew 98,000, the GF had just over 97,000.

Was unusual that the granny wasn't the biggest crowd for the year.  I know of 2 empty seats cos I mentioned to someone that I was surprised he was watching at the local pub instead of at the game and he said he just couldn't be bothered going and would have gladly given me the tickets had he realised I would have liked to have gone.

It really annoys me that grass roots supporters miss out when seats are left empty.  Toyota alone have 10,000 tickets.  Each dealership gets 4 tickets, supposedly one for the manager and 3 for their best clients.

If that's true Rosy, that is a disgrace.  >:( Yes, sponsors are important, but the club members are and fans are what keep the game going.

That's what we were told by the person who could have given us tickets. He's the manager/ principal of one of Melbourne's biggest car dealerships. There's no way of ever knowing if it's fact or not I suppose but I certainly take his word at face value. Have known him for many, many years and think his honesty is beyond question.

Disagree Rosy on the point of empty seats were paid for & I would hate if I was running late it was sold on me had I not scanned in by a certain time. If I pay & not get in, its not the AFL's fault. I would be more concern that sonsors don't use their tickets & hope the AFL monitors how many were used by the bar codes.

As far as the Toyota deal, well I agree (Should be 5000 maybe). IMO the extra 5000 seats be distributed to the two competiting clubs in the GF. Maybe also reduce other sponsor tickets to allocate more to the competiting clubs. Non competiting clubs get 1000 (which they use for extra revenue in certain package & thats fair enough).

I have been able to go to the GF for years now. It comes down to chosing the right membership.

I had in 1990 chose to be an AFL member & club support for the Tiges. It took a few years to become a full member and now I just love it. I budget for it each year.

People harp about the MCC membership but if you weigh it up its not worth it (especially the amount of years you have to wait, seriously over-rated in my book). A person of the street nowdays has no chance of a GF ticket, you need to at least be a member & fair enough. You get a club basic membership, you go in a ballot (still minimal chance). I love going to the GF so in the end AFL Club support membership is the best and my only option. I have not missed out in getting GF tickets for years now. My child become a full member this year after 5 years of being a silver AFL member & she come to the GF aswell.

From the AFL site on allocation of seats for the Grand Final (No off the street sales !).

1. Competing Club Members 16000 - 26000
2. AFL Clubs (16 x 1000) 16000
3. MCC Reserve 16000 - 26000
4. AFL Members 15000 - 25000
5. AFL/Medallion Club Members 4500 - 5000
6. AFL Entitlements/Contractual Obligations 5000 - 15000
7. Competing Clubs 1500 - 2500

Total 100,000 (approx)

I supect people who pay for seats are far more likely to attend. My friend has tickets every year too but has become a tad blasé about it all and it means nothing to him to decide on the day not to go. He doesn't pay for his tickets though.

Good luck to you choosing the right membership to ensure you get to a grand final every year but that's not an option for many basic, grass roots club members. The ones who attend each week throughout the season but to whom a grand final attendance is almost an impossible dream.

True it does come down to the old $$ for all supporters & not just ones classfied as "grass roots" having more of a preference.

Higher memberships are not always affordable for football supporters but I do budget for it to ensure I maintain my priviledge because I love going & also at times to other matches. I sacrifice on other things for this membership as my true passion is football and it would kill me to miss out if RFC make it.

Thats why I also believe in only allocating more seats by the AFL to competiting clubs for paid up members to even it out abit more to increase the possibility of normal memberships. The AFL is a big cash cow & it too has obligation to others to maintian its status quo & revenue in return for all clubs. Juggling act & it would be hard to please everyone

No worries L80. Probably don't have any more time on my hands than anyone else, just manage to misuse it better. ;D
