AFL Hall of Fame

if you want role models for kids how about as a society we put that onus on parents.

Bravo clawsy. Bravo.

Judge them as to their contributions to football and football only.

They are footballers for goodness sakes not priests.

And what if some of these footballers were Bali bombers? Would you all still be wanting them in the hall of fame? Ablett, as far as I'm concerned, is responsible for the death of another human being and should be in jail like anyone else would be.

You're right Claw, footballers stuff up just like the rest of us do. The problem is, they get away with it as society treats them as if they are somehow above us mere mortals.

For me, I just don't want to pat a bloke on the back who whacks a wine glass in his girls face.

A pass for me.

in a word yes. why because the hall of fame is about football exploits not about society or what individuals have done as private citizens.. what you are advocating is we wipe from history what carey did on the foofty field.

and i disagree footballers do not get away with anything. in fact in society and the media are judge jury and executioner. how many average joe bloes are ostricised and hauled over the coals and fined massive amounts of money because they are like every one else they made a mistake they lacked a bit of judgement they got caught speeding or got done for pissy driving or how about they got into a bit of a stoush like what happened with masten recently. the average joe bloggs puts up with none of this because they arent afl players ano one would have heard about any of these instances.

sheesh footballers cant even comment on what they believe because it might contradict what the political correct pussies think is right god forbid your in trouble then.

600 odd listed afl players i bet if you compared the percentage of misdemeanors to what happens in society the percentages would be similar. footballers are representative of a cross section of society warts and all. in fact it is just plain stupidity to expect people to not be human and make mistakes. dont judge them on the fact they have done something wrong but their ability to acknowledge the mistake and do something about making sure it doesnt happen again in short they show they can learn from their mistakes.

I'll begin this by stating that Carey is a pig of a man with the morals of an alley cat, he was however a brilliant footballer. I may be in the minority here, but I think that the criteria for entering the AFL Hall of Fame are what you did on the field, not what trouble you got into off it. Using that Carey is a walk up start and should be in. I'm with Mark Robinson on this, he believes that as a footballer Carey should be in, otherwise we'd have a Good Blokes Hall of Fame.

The criteria requires a certain standard of personal character / behaviour as well as the football ability bit.
They'll probably give the Wank a miss for this year and slip him in next year when no ones looking.
Part of the old fossilised requirements of SPORTSmen or women was that they conducted themselves in what was regarded as sportsmanlike fashion, their behaviour/ character was expected to be exemplary, at least where the public could find out about it.
Nowadays anyone with a bit of talent anywhere is gifted godlike adulation until they show themselves totally unable to cope with all the crap going on around them and then the media totally disects every millimetre of their disintergration.

it's all about timing isnt it? now wouldnt be a good time to HOF him. wait a few years then do it.

Same happened with G.Ablett. There were a lot of people grieving at that time and it made sense to put it back a few years.

These days footy clubs put in a heap of time doing background checks, talking to parents, past junior coaches, teachers etc. to weed out this sort of stuff happening so in their view these guys aren't you average Joe, they're meant to be well rounded kids.
There will be exceptions like Fevola that was a d!ckhead even in his junior days but if he comes in and kicks 11 goals in his first game they turn a blind eye.

As far as parents being role models goes, that's a given.
The ones who's parents weren't role models but just happened to be a gifted footballer/sportspersons are the ones that the clubs are suss about drafting and the ones that end up on the front pages of the papers.

If you think AFL footballers are an accurate representation of your average 17-28 year old your kidding yourself.
These guys are treated like spoilt kids that don't have to do anything for themselves, are on lucrative wages, and treated like royality.

How many average 17-28 years olds get a fully paid trip OS with work for a couple of weeks so they can see hw good they've got it back home!!

If you think that's the average kid, one night go stand on Frankston/Dandenong/Broadmeadows train platforms for a while and see what you reckon then. If you come out of it with your wallet, mobile phone and all your teeth you might change your mind

thats just it. they are your average joe blows. they just happen to earn big bucks playing sport. they are representative of society.
Sorry claw, but the big bucks are there because of the responsibilities they need to carry off the field. They don't get paid the big bucks just because they are good at sport, it's also because they are in the public eye and need to keep their nose clean. They lose a lot of freedoms and have a short career so need to make a lifetimes salary in their limited time in the game.

If they don't like being in the spotlight and don't want to be a role model, then they simply can play at a lower level, it's part of the job description these days and there's no escaping it.
