There will be no season. Get on with it.
You may be right.
I just can't see why they need to be rushed into making big decisions. What's wrong with giving them a little bit of time to work out different scenarios. They can make agreements for several situations that may or may not occur.

Nobody knows what gil makes. The AFL doesn't have shareholders or voters, so opacity all the way. I'm amazed at the apparent total lack of contingency. Billion dollar operation broke as soon as it hits rough waters. Negligent
Not sure anyone would have forseen a cancelled season? Do they produce an annual report etc?

They should have plans for worst case scenarios. I'm not saying they should have had enough to sail through unscathed, some severe belt tightening would always have been required, but this is negligent. As for afl accountability, they aren't, they make a show of it but aren't. Like a mini FIFA. Huge revenues, but effectively untouchable.

Thanks for that TOO.

Probably gives it a bit of context around the players IMO.

If you look at revenue generated by the AFL over a 5 and 10 year period. The CAGR is a growth of 11.6% (annualised) from 2010 and 5% (annualised) from 2014. At the same time, AFL expenditure has vastly outrisen that, we were told that buying Etihad would be a great deal for the AFL and would reduce operating costs so the question has to be asked where the money has gone. In the same time periods the CAGR of AFL expenses have risen an average of 17.4% annually since 2010 and 6.2% since 2014 both way in excess of revenue. This doesn't even take into account the additional costs of GWS and Gold Coast as that comes out of the surplus.

At the same time TPP has increased by 8.1% and 3.2% (both average annual - CAGR) and both well below the AFL revenue increases of 11.6% and 5%m so all this crap we've been fed around increases in revenue going to the players, well that seems incorrect to me. Distributions to clubs have also risen by more than TPP, so indicates more of that money is going to other sources rather than just to the players, ie. AFLW, AFLX, larger soft caps etc.

I'd love to take a look at the details to find out where that money has been spent. AFL has a clear spending problem.

Just to go into that overspend and give a bit more clarity.

AFL surplus in 2010 was 67.8% ($248m over $367m revenue). In 2019 that had dropped to 57.7% ($458m over $794m revenue). That means that the AFL has is now spending proportionally more than they were in 2010 by 10.1%, when most would indicate that their costs are largely fixed. The impact of this in just one year, take 2019 was $80m!! Where did that $80m go and what did the game gain from it? They give no breakdown of this other than calling them Operating expenses.

I'm ok with the players wanting to see what happens after 31/05, they have agreed to a 50% pay cut until then.
I would like to think that they will be reasonable in their negotiations if the game looks like being delayed further.
Why hasn't there been much talk about the $120 million that the AFL has got squirrelled away in their future fund.
As Zip A Dee (Doo Da Doo Da) said, the AFL needs to cut back on the money that they waste.
Glad you posted that TM.
The media is as usual playing the AFL line.

As I understand it the AFL said they are closed till 31/5 and will try to run a 17 game season and finals after that if possible.
They then reject an offer by AFLPA to lower wages until then and insist that they accept a reduction for the entire 2020 season before knowing what that season will be.

I also note that the broadcasters have already paid 1/4 of the annual fee for 2020.
What's happening with that money?

I appreciate that this year is totally up in the air as far as survival is concerned but isn't that even more reason to strike a deal till 31/5 and then re-negotiate after that when the details are clearer.

AFL are currently winning the PR war as the media continue to follow their misinformation and don't look at the details.
Jack might be better off just saying to the media "Hey we've offered a cut till 31/5 and to negotiate further after that. Why would we agree to cuts for a 2020 season when we don't know if it will occur or how many games are involved."

Haha the AFL look stupid out of all of this now, went the PR route against the players and have now accepted exactly what was initially offered by the AFLPA, 50% for the 1st 2 months.

Slobbo's back peddling at 100 miles per hour about the greedy players now. The players were always going to do the right thing. If he had a shred of decency he would apologise to them.

Disagree. No show, no dough. Footy is temporarily dead and the players have been slow to come to terms with it.

Key words there are ‘shred of decency’. Robbo is the image of sleazy, muck raking reporter.
