Alex Rance

Super effort to keep his attacking frame of mind to create play from the backline.
Love his attack on the ball.
I thought Cloke played well too.
It was a good duel all night.

plays the game hard and fast and attacking. too bad many of his teamates were statues and he had to thread the eye of the needle at times. he and grimes were impressive and should be able to hold down key defensive posts, all we need is a swing man like griff or astbury to play forward and back when needed.

Couldn't believe the serve he was getting off the commentators last night. He played a very very good game. Cloke kicked a few - which is almost a given these days. But Rance was able to take the game on and set up a lot of our play coming out of the back half. His intercept marks were incredible - how many did he have? 34 touches is nothing to put your nose up at for a full back. Still only a kid. Cut the too cute type kicks and he wi be an elite backman for a long time no iof doubt at all. Good job rancey

If Scarlett had the same game they would be raving --not saying Rance is anywhere near Scarlett's level but the way he played his own game while still beating the best contested mark in the comp is a real credit to him. Best player over the 4 quarters

Good to see Rance not taking a step backwards from last season's strong year. He is now a reliable defender down back. We just need to hang in there and wait for Grimes to get more experience and hopefully Astbury to get back from injury and get another few years under his belt. I really see these 3 guys as the key to our future defence.

Always been a fan of Alex. Thank goodness we stuck to our guns and he didn't go to Hawthorn. Fearless and attacks every contest as if it is his last. Once we get some runners down back (hate to admit it but The scums midfielders especially Swan work damn hard to give the backline support) his disposal will look much better. Kicking to statues on the wings makes life hard for a defender.

The single dumbest post I've read on the game.

Rance is a standout. Watch a replay and note how many of his kicks under pressure hit their targets. How many times he reads the play and intercepts the ball both in the air and on the ground. How many one on one's with Cloke he won. How many he frees he won by getting position on Cloke. He also got a subtle headbutt in on Cloke at one stage. How many times he ran off Cloke and set play up. Redan noted earlier the goal he set up for Miller in the last through sheer gut-running off Cloke. The same Cloke who is ackowledged as the best CHF in the game, and in the Top 5 players in the league. Cloke got 2 of his 3 goals when Rance was trying to assist others and was caught out of position and received no help from a teammate in manning Cloke up.

Rance has fast become my favourite player. The kid will be a gun.

You're kidding me. He punches when he shouldn't, tries to mark when he should punch, he's got no idea. And he's stagnant when he gets the ball. In the third qaurter he flies over 3 Richmond players to punch the ball and it goes straight to Collingwood for a goal. He just does not have footy smarts. He won't be a gun until he can kick properly and get the ball moving, which I'm afraid may never happen

Have you watched him since season 2009?
There were elements of those things in his early games - bur fair dinkim - he's becoming the genuine article now.

This must be some kind of late April Fools joke...surely.

Mindboggling comment. Is that you BT?

It's all well and good, everyone interprets a game in there own way.
But to say he hasn't improved or that he hasn't got any scope to improve, your good no idea.
He kept the so called "power foward" of the competition to 3 goals and considering he couldn't miss on sateday night, that's a very good effort. Usually Cloke would finished the game with 3.6.
I'm not sure what he ended up with & I don't really care, but 3 of our spots in defence are ok and he is part of that group.

Has come on brilliantly.

I'm still finding it difficult to completely trust him though. It dimishes week by week however.

Watching the game a second time

a) Rance was brilliant, keeps us in the game with how well he rebounds and leaves his man to repel attacks. He barely got beaten one-on-one once by Cloke, the best contested mark in the AFL.
b) The commentary was poor, what they were saying about Rance was losing the woods for a few trees.

Both Rance and Grimes have come in huge strides over the last 12 months.

Rance stagnant? Watch a replay and see how much run and support he provides. It's a main feature of his game.

Kick properly? You need to watch a replay, he hits numerous targets under pressure despite the biased commentary. He made one poor kick when he was knackered and not expecting the ball back.

You should apply for a job as a Channel 7 commentator.

A couple of the stats in regard to Rance are a cause for concern IMO. I just read on the club website that he had the most marks for Richmond since 2008. He also had 32 possies. Does this mean that we are returning to the chiping it around game plan. I agree that we need to control the ball and not just bomb it long, but we also need to be decisive and take risks coming out of the backline. Thoughts?

That isn't correct, even McGuane's taken more marks. Since they're not the contested/repelling mark types, it probably says something about which players the opposition are prepared to let have the ball when we're switching play.

Certainly was an unusual game and I'm not sure whether it was our doing or Collingwood's setup forcing us into the chip stuff as they tired in the second half.

Last night Eade said something along the lines of the Pies trying to prevent Richmond moving in the directions the wanted hence forcing us to move it around the backs. It sounds like they did some research on our game plan and put something in place to nullify it.

It worked to a point. But I'm still pleased that they felt they needed to look at stopping us. A couple of years ago they wouldn't have cared.
