Alex Rance

One of the most impressive things with Rance's game last weekend was his ability to know when to spoil, and when to go for the mark.

We have an interesting mix of big defenders at the moment:

Grimes is a great spoiler, however seems to have little capability to take a mark. Spoiling just seems his first and most natural instinct.

Posty (while out of favour at the moment) seems to go for the mark every time (as he does have good hands), but has absolutely no idea how to spoil.

Rancey has seemed to get the balance just right, and appears to make the right option given the situation. I can't imagine how difficult it must be as a key defender, having to make that split second decision on whether to go for the mark or spoil, but Alex did it perfectly on Saturday.

With Jack and TV completely out of sorts at the moment, I would say Alex has surpassed them and is in our top 2 or 3 most important players right now.

I think you are thinking of the 2011 Grimes. He has taken more than 20 marks in the last 2 weeks.

There has been a marked change in style from Dylan imo or maybe he has just become more confident.

correct. grimes is going for his marks now and taking them. this was my main criticism last year but he's quickly fixed this.

I think it was down to coach's instructions tbh. Last year the focus was on killing the contest, this year he is to work on taking more marks.

Ne interested to know how many of the 20 marks were:
>Taken overhead
>Contested

My impression is that most would be taken from a sideways kick to switch.

I know what you mean but to me that is not really the main issue. The point is that he now involved in the play much more. He is taking marks, receiving and giving off kicks and handballs. He is not playing just like a Thursty style negater anymore.
On the topic of the thread the improvement in Rance overhead is astonishing to me. He was awful 2 years ago, totally devoid of technique and confidence overhead. Last year he progressed to being adequate, safe in a non contested situation. He has now started to clunk really good marks overhead and attacks the ball with confidence. Obviously Alex has worked really hard on this part of his game but the coaching staff must have as well.

Rance has improved out of sight, some excellent coaching from Lepps. Grimes also is starting to show excellent promise as a tall defender. If they can hold down FB and CHB, that takes some heat off Astbury who can play 3rd tall developing accordingly. Have to say that maybe just maybe our defending stocks are starting to improve which can only bode well for the future.

Word and observation suggest he's a joker and very popular with team-mates, so I expect having him around helps engender team spirit and keep morale high. He's important to the team in a few ways.

Id be signing him to a long term fast!
Darren Glass is getting on, scofield dawson and johnson are nowhere as good as Rance.
Id say Perth will be knocking down Rances door within 12 months.

rance is fast becoming one of my favourite players.

absolutely love the way he goes about it. hard as anything, super courageous and skillfull enough for a full back.

He's become the player he was in those junior highlight clips all those years ago, only now he's doing it at senior level.
Everyone was wrapped when he slid down the draft order but early doors it looked a big mistake. Boy has he developed well.
Another reminder that talls do indeed take longer.

Rance is quickly becoming one of the gun players in the competition. We're lucky to have him.
Hopefully becomes a premiership defender.

Not as good as Glass in the air but better on the rebound.

BTW last week Clark was a bit too good for Alex early but then our man took out an RO. (Guess he got tired of getting kissed. Hopefully the whole team does.)

One of the positions we have covered. x

funny skimming through the thread from the start
Some us couldn't wait to get rid of him early on. :hihi

I always thought Glass was useless - and still do to a degree and I would take Rance over him any day.

I don't remember if I did or not.

But i have to say the boy is having a good start to this year, I like the cut of his jib!

Wasn't happy with the over the top pasting he got on Chanel 7 , Taylor just kept on and on and on.

His disposal is fine for his role as far as I'm concerned, his attack on the footy is great. he seems to be scragging well, and taking the game on, love it.
