Alex Rance

Rance's pack marking has become such a feature of his game.

Vastly improved in that area. And takes the game on. Is always looking to push the tempo, move the ball quick.

No doubt he's improved in that area a lot. Still tends to fumble a few marks each game that that he gets clean hands to though which puts pressure on him at ground level.

Very true. One of the most attacking FB's in the comp

Play ends when the ball stops dead if the ball if the ball is kicked before the siren. He shouldn't punched it through.

I always thought that play ends when the umpire blows his whistle to signify the end of the quarter. The siren sounds, it registers on the umpire, he blows his whistle and raises his hands to end the quarter, anyhting that happen safter his arm is raised is too late. I have noticed a couple of times lately that the umpires have delayed blowing the whistle until a kick is played out.

Is this yet another rule change? Who can keep track?

Not a rule change I don't think, just don't see it a lot. It's the same as if a player kicks the ball before the siren and it goes through after the siren it's still a goal.

It shouldn't be, unless there has been a rule change. As I understand it, the umpire is supposed to blow the whistle as soon as he hears the siren and anything that plays out after he blows it doesn't count. You see this is junior and suburban footy every day. The umpires blow the whistle and everything that happens afterwards doesn't matter. I have been a goal umpire on a number of occasions when the umpire has basically said that the score won't count because he deemed it to go through after he blew the whistle. His opinion is the only one that counts. The siren is irrelevent, it is just a cue to tell him to end the quarter.

AFL umpires seem to be ball-watching for a while before blowing the whistle. I am wondering if they have been instructed to let the action play out if there is a kick in the air near the goals and to wait for it to go through or whatever.

Appears the behind does count..

Football touched in transit after siren
A Behind shall still be recorded under Law 12.5.1 if the football is touched in transit by another Player, provided the field Umpire is satisfied that the scoring of the Behind was not assisted by a Player from the same Team.

Just needs to pick his moments though. Took one good mark in the last quarter, played on and handballed to Ivan who had three Eagles surrounding him. A clearance from the defensive 50 becomes a ball up 30 metres from goal.

Even though he has improved out of sight, I still hold my breath when he gets the ball.

Barnzy is spot on. If the player gets the kick away before the siren it counts, doesn't matter if the siren goes whilst the ball is in transit. It is common sense, the action occurs before the siren so the kick has to count.

Hope you didn't cost a team a game TOT when you were goal umpire!

Actually I think the quarter ends at the point the umpire deems he heard the siren. That is, if a kick occurs in play before the umpire blows his whistle and raises his arms but after the umpire believed he heard the siren then the kick won't count.

Rance has vastly improved his disposal. Still had to wonder at the handball to a teammate' back at one stage.

He an Grimes have done very well considering most thought kpd was our biggest weakness......like to know the tally of goals kicked on the 2 lads

On the contrary, I think Rance has improved his decsion-making, technically his kicking has always been of a reasonable standard.

The area that has seen dramatic improvement has been his marking, same with Grimes. I think Leppa deserves a big pat on the back for the work he's doing as defensive coach.

It was towards the end of the game and he was looking to take the game on. He played on directly up the middle and was screaming at the iVan as he ran towards him. It appeared to be a very ambitious handball without the fact big iVan was facing the other way. Didn't cost us anything but a feature of Rance's game is this dash and daring. Long may it continue.

To me, decision-making is part of the act of good disposal and clearly he is making better decisions.

That was an absolute brain fade and unfortunately indicative of why we have lost the last 2 weeks. We lose our cool under pressure.

But that handball, even though Maric was killing them, was suicidal.

Few fluffed kicks today but...

27 disposals, 12 marks and only allowed Sam Reid to 5 touches and 1 mark. One of the biggest spankings you'll see.

Fair dinkum Sam Reid has been overrated. Only a month ago the football world was labelling him a star.
