I received the following e-mail from a business associate last week.
I know this is not Richmond football focused, but I think it is an incredible revelation worth sharing.
Some of you will know that I have recently returned from Beijing where I went to see my business partner Drew Ginn win his 3rd gold medal from 3 Olympic campaigns. It was a great journey that we have shared over the last 2 years and I am very privileged to have been included in the planning team and simply to have a friend who is a champion in the truest sense.
What made Drew’s performance even more remarkable was that in the week prior to the heats he suffered a recurrence of the back injury that required surgery in 2000 and kept him out of the Sydney Olympics. He was unable to train at all during the Olympics and rowed in considerable pain in the heat, semi and final. His and Duncan’s victory was all on ability, the preparation they had done in the year before and sheer mental toughness.
After the final (and when a few beers had worn off) Drew’s back and related sciatica problems worsened and he spent the last few days in bed with considerable loss of feeling in his leg and foot. He didn’t look well when he returned last Tuesday and immediately went into hospital last week and underwent surgery on Friday. He will be discharged today and will need about a month in bed to recover and return to work.
Hope it inspired you.
