An interesting observation

Gee we were stiff that Rich didn't fall one more pick. That kid does everything to make his team better. Has gone back twice with the flight, has great hands and is a one touch footballer. I know there are a lot of what ifs at the draft table but to pair Rich with Cotchin, Deledio and Foley would have built a engine room that could play for ten years and would be touted as a Fab Four of the future.

I thought the same thing at the time of the draft. But reading the comments from the recruiters after the draft, it seemed clear to me that they were always going to take Vickery. They said they put the thumbs up in glee to Tyrone's old man across the floor in the draft room when they knew they would get him (Tyrone).

I say don't bring up Scotty because for all his likeable traits, he wasn't actually that great. A particular game that is ingrained in my mind is him playing on G Ablett at the G, and Ablett kicked well over 10 on him that day.
I might add, a very good memory is of Scotty bumping O'Donnell, but I'm sure I'm not alone there as a Richmond supporter.

Had a fantastic year in '95 - kept Lockett to 2 at the SCG and held Dunstall goalless. Outside that, I agree, he wasn't great. Early in his career he made regular, monumental stuff-ups that would put e.g. Ray Hall in the shade. One that comes to mind is Richo handballing to him in the goal square at Optus Oval, with nobody near him, and Turner fumbling the ball through for a point.

Agree LTRTR. We must be of similar vintage. I remember two whipping boys of mine in their early days Maxfield and Turner, great endeavour and physicality but really fumbled a lot and were careless with their disposal and decision making in their early days. Both had a pretty inconsistent frirst 40- 50 games but from three on in provided great value to Tiges (and Swans). Maybe guided by a good coach in Northey or perhaps they just found their feet. Still instructive in not writing players off too early.

PS just to be unpopular and on topic Jordy is a nice long low fast 55 metre kick when he decides to use it.

Haven't seen Newmo really let the big dog off the chain this year. I was hoping they'd worked out a kick-in strategy over the summer that had Richo and Simmo roaming about 60-70 out with Newmo firing off a barrel! He's a prodigious kick. The other one no-one has mentioned is Whitey. No he is not really a genuine 50+ kick, but his pace is blistering and if he just gets it to boot on the run the thing carries the distance easily.

You need guys who kick the ball quick through the air. Move it fast.

Bring back Scotty Turner! He could pass the thing 50m with no hang time!

It's no use kicking it 50m if you leave it hanging up there too long, which most of our longer kickers tend to do!

Very valid points given the quickness of todays game. If you want to pick apart a zone, you'd better have the kicking to do it quickly. I'd think speed of delivery is more important than length of kick.

Our lack of success in recent times gets back largely to the fact that we have as squad of players who generally have average kicking skills.

Newman would be the most consistent long kick in our team by a fair margin. He can fairly roost it.
