This week I've been taking some 1/2 days off work to watch my son play in the Russell Allen for the CMCA. You can read the VMCU results in your Melbourne newspaper this week and next. I've used the opportunity to assist by scoring in part for the team.
The CMCA U14 scorebook goes back to 1996, and I took some time to wander back through the book to peruse the names of the various boys. Some grew up to be current Longmuir players for my local team.

One name that struck me that I thought might interest you all was in the 1999 team, one W.Thursfield. It would appear that Will played in 2 VMCU U14 matches for the CMCA.

His first was 7/2/1999, CMCA v Federal, at Lords Reserve.
Will, bowler #2, 4 overs, 3 maidens, none for 2; Federal 6/107.
Will named at #10, but did not bat; CMCA 5/110 to win by 5 wickets.

His 2nd game was 5/12/1999, CMCA v BHRDCA (whatever that is), at Sillitoe Reserve.
Will, bowler #1, 8 overs, no maidens, none for 31; BHRDCA 4/191.
Will, batting at #4 this time, bowled Migliore for a duck; CMCA 185 to lose by 6 runs.

So that was Will's venture into real competitive cricket.

My conclusion:
Opened the bowling both times and couldn't take a wicket.
Couldn't score a run.

Fortunately Will can play a little footy, so he didn't have to rely on his cricketing skills for a career.

Opening bowler aye, that accounts for the bad back. ;)

So as a cricketer he makes a fantastic footballer.

My claim to fame is an u/14 scorebook at home in which I skittled Robert Harvey for a duck. Although I always note that Bob was actually a very accomplished cricketer too.

Don't you hate those blokes that can do everything?!

hey Phanto, i am sure u are breaking some law by publishing thirsty's cricket achievements. Shame on u!

and u should know better as the winner of our pre ender of the year! i expect our legal team may strip u of this hallowed honor.

Give you half a chance, I'm sure you would. ;)

It's a great honour being picked in the U14 CMCA rep side. I'm sure that Will would have been an outstanding junior cricketer to have been selected.

It's all about fun, and memories, and building confidence. Any form of 'rep' sport is about these things.

Well done Will.

That's something to remember and brag about Hopper :clap.......considering Robert Harvey is a member of the famous Australian cricketing Harveys, with Neil and Merv playing for Australia, and Ray being a record holding Victorian player. Rob's father had a long and distinguished district cricket career with Fitzroy as well.
Rob actually ended up opening the bowling for Fitzroy-Doncaster 1sts at some stage while combining this with AFL footy. He was quick too. I remember that much about him as a junior cricketer. Those were the days when AFL clubs wanted players to have lives in the off-season.

Yeah, it's a nice (although somewhat irrelevant) brag. Some smartarse once responded it was nothing at all - like beating Kostya Tszyu in a game of darts! Some people! ;)

hey phanto u all done with yr official engagements yet after winning pre ender of the year?

well the carbine club was first, then what u have to do? sign some cricket bats?

One of our more accomplished cricketers was Todd Breman who topped the batting and bowling averages for the WACA in different years.

Breman played pretty good footy for Subiaco, (unfortunately not for us). Saw him kick about 7 or 8 in a prelim in the WAFL. Most from a long way out. A very prodigious kick of the ball.

St Kilda footy club has produced two great cricket talents.

Mr Shane Warne (the games best ever bowler) and Mr Simon O'Donnell.

Both played in winning world cup sides.

Liam Pickering was another good footballer / cricketer.

We also have our own Nick Jewell who play one senior game and is a regular for the bushrangers.

I know because I'm part of it.

Ak, yes, now I know.

The CMCA played their prelim match against your assoc before Xmas.

What bad back? Please, please please no! :'(
