This week I've been taking some 1/2 days off work to watch my son play in the Russell Allen for the CMCA. You can read the VMCU results in your Melbourne newspaper this week and next. I've used the opportunity to assist by scoring in part for the team.
The CMCA U14 scorebook goes back to 1996, and I took some time to wander back through the book to peruse the names of the various boys. Some grew up to be current Longmuir players for my local team.
One name that struck me that I thought might interest you all was in the 1999 team, one W.Thursfield. It would appear that Will played in 2 VMCU U14 matches for the CMCA.
His first was 7/2/1999, CMCA v Federal, at Lords Reserve.
Will, bowler #2, 4 overs, 3 maidens, none for 2; Federal 6/107.
Will named at #10, but did not bat; CMCA 5/110 to win by 5 wickets.
His 2nd game was 5/12/1999, CMCA v BHRDCA (whatever that is), at Sillitoe Reserve.
Will, bowler #1, 8 overs, no maidens, none for 31; BHRDCA 4/191.
Will, batting at #4 this time, bowled Migliore for a duck; CMCA 185 to lose by 6 runs.
So that was Will's venture into real competitive cricket.
My conclusion:
Opened the bowling both times and couldn't take a wicket.
Couldn't score a run.
Fortunately Will can play a little footy, so he didn't have to rely on his cricketing skills for a career.
Opening bowler aye, that accounts for the bad back.
