1. Hard to believe this list won the 1st of 3 premierships only 3 years later.
2. Alot of the young kids didn't make it.
3. The core of this list seems to be 21-22yo in 1998.
4. Our core seems to be 18-20yo, so we look to be about 5 years off.

I welcome your comments.

Re: Anatomy of a premiership era. Part One, The Brisbane List, early 1998

Great Post Phantom, hopefully TW has a similar plan on what the team should look like in 4-5 years.

Re: Anatomy of a premiership era. Part One, The Brisbane List, early 1998

Can wait as long as it takes if there's a blueprint of some sort being adhered to rigidly.

Interesting the number of smaller players who are prominent in this case study. The engine room cannot be ignored and this heartens me. We need to continue to look for quality rover types in drafts as they can slip through to picks far lower than their value at times.

Great thread, Phanto.

Re: Anatomy of a premiership era. Part One, The Brisbane List, early 1998

Matthew Clarke was traded to Adelaide in 1999 for draft picks 6 (Damien Cupido) and 21 (which ended up at Sydney [Stefan Carey deal??] and was used on Scott Stevens)

Many thanks Ready, I shall amend my post.

Re: Anatomy of a premiership era. Part One, The Brisbane List, early 1998

In my opinion, the biggest difference made to the Brisbane list after 98, was the inclusion of Mal Michael & Jonathan Brown in key position posts (ie. Full Back & CHF). Additionally, in typical Leigh Matthew's fashion, many players were traded / or delisted, because they simply didn't cut it. Matthew's has a reputation of not wasting his time with players who are not consistently skillful, commited & hard at the football.

At this moment, we may well "...look to be about 5 years off", but the process may take longer if TW & Richmond continue to experiment with the same mix of players for long periods of time. Recruiting big names without the number 1 pick in the draft will also help !!!

Re: Anatomy of a premiership era. Part One, The Brisbane List, early 1998

If there is one glaring thing on that Brisbane list that we don't have, its a bloke of the stature and leadership qualities of Michael Voss.  He's nearing the end now, but in full flight, at his uninjured best, Voss could dominate games by imposing himself both mentally and physically.

Re: Anatomy of a premiership era. Part One, The Brisbane List, early 1998

Let me take my opinion one step further...Players like *smile*, Kellaway, Hilton, Tuck, Hyde, Krakouer, Tivendale & Chaffey have all been handy players for Richmond. Young players like Pettifer, Jackson, Hartigan & Rodan are all promising future players. But there is no fine line drawn to winning premierships.

Sure, the RFC is working towards building a football club with the necessary requirements (staff & resources), to develop talent, but IMO, to win a premiership, every player must bring something special to a football club.

In 1996, the Brisbane Lions negotiated some very good sponsorship deals (aided by the AFL). They appointed Leigh Matthew's as coach (similar to Richmond with TW). The Gabba was being developed to include some of the best facilities in the AFL. Having implemented the right infrastructure, the club (led by LM), made some tough decisions. Their list was revamped and no player was given special previleges. Leigh Matthew's knows the secret to winning premierships and in 1998, Brisbane were way short from that mark.

In similar circumstances, TW & the RFC have began changing the culture of a once proud football club. The facilities at Punt Rd have been improved to a standard necessary for success. Membership & corporate sponsorship is improving and the profile of the Tigers has regained some repect in recent times.

Now, the Tigers must swing into Operation Marzipan (The "Iceing" on the cake). A shrewd approach is required towards recruiting, delisting, trading & player management if the Tigers are going to build an empire similar to the Brisbane Lions.

Re: Anatomy of a premiership era. Part One, The Brisbane List, early 1998

Great post Phantom.

i thought yesterday was a really interesting insight into RFC and our future.

For the first time in i-can't-remember-when, we executed a game plan and nearly pinched a game not many would have thought we could/should have won. GFC fell into playing 'our' style of game (bought on by the 4-5 goal breeze) and in the end their deeper list (i.e. they have more good players) got them over the line.

GFC seemed to have the exact blokes you pointed out (20-24 y/o's) who have bigger/stronger bodies and have played together for a few seasons. This was particularly apparent is their backline where Scarlett, Harley and Mooney wax it amongst themselves and cover each other easily. With Gaspar and Kellaway not viable in the 4-5 year window it will be interesting who they build around (Shultz looked decent y'day but he needs 10-15 games in a row at CHB IMO before we could gauge).

All in all i thought y'day showed TW is in the 'better coaches' bracket but we need to continue to get good young players in the next 1-3 years to become consistently competitive (GF level).

Interesting to note the development in weight of some of the boys in this premiership year from what they were 4 years earlier.

Also, interesting the continual changes in the list.
The only recruits from other clubs were:
1. Martin Pike, a premiership player with North.
2. Mal Michael, originally a Qld'r anyway, to fill FB position.
3. Mick Martin, from Footscray, marginal player, didn't succeed.

Another point that strikes me is that it is NOT so important to be overly tall, but how strong and fast. The goal to goal line of,
Michael, 190, 94
Leppitsch, 188, 97
Voss, 181, 89
Brown, 194, 93
Lynch, 193, 98,
isn't that tall, but look how strong it is.

Great analytical post Phanto. Looks like our boys better get into the weight room and the protein powder over the next few years. You only have to look at the muscular defined bodies of the WCE and Adelaide players to realise that you are on the money with this post.

brisbane made the finals in 95 96 and 97 they finished 3rd in 96. then they got the spoon in 98 which enabled them to top up with quality and they never looked back for 6 yrs. a lot of the hard work was done in building the list in 94 thru 97.it took the lions over 7 yrs to build the dynasty they had.

Yeh, you're right Claw.
In retrospect, I probably should have gone further back to when players like White, Leppitsch, Ashcroft, Voss, McRae & Akermanis were initially recruited.

P - pre-season draft
M - came with Fitzroy merger

National draft selections are similar to our current list
Range  Br Ri
Top 10  5  4
11-30   6  6
31-50   8  7

FS/merger picks of Brown and Johnson balanced by our FS's Richardson & Bowden. Note however the zone selection picks of Voss, Akermanis, White, Ashcroft (via Brisbane reserves) & Keating - effectively concession picks given to develop football in Queensland.

Also some astute use of recycled players in there too. Lynch, Pike, Mal Michael and B Scott all went on to play very good football with the Lions. Probably not recycled in the true sense (apart from Pike), but still let go by their respective clubs.
