Just might take some spare New Year time to do a review of the years that took place before our last premiership win.
For those that don't remember, the 1980 Premiership team lined up as:
Malthouse, Bourke, Dunne
Smith, Mount, Strachan
Wood, Raines, Welsh
Wiley, Jess, Bartlett
Cloke, Roach, Weightman
Lee, Keane, Rowlings
Monteath, Freame
But what did the side look like some 3 years before. Let's go back to the year that Bones Richardson took over as coach. Clay, Sproule, Thorpe et al had retired. Royce was to retire mid-1977. The U19s had made the GF in 1976, and won one in 1977. The Resies had won the 1977 GF too.
The Senior side, based on most games played that year, looked something like this:
Keane,24,184,83, Jenkinson,20,193,83, Robertson,24,196,92
Clayton,20,180,85, Bourke,30,185,85, Sheedy,30,180,81
W.Walsh,31,179,76, Pitura,27,185,86, Wood,22,184,84
Edwards,20,188,90, Jess,22,188,85, N.Roberts,22,183,81
Cloke,22,197,100, Noonan,30,188,89, Raines,21,182,78
Balme,25,193,100, Monteath,22,189,84, Bartlett,30,175,71
Dunne,21,197,99, Malthouse,24,180,78
As you can see, the names from that team of 1977 that went onto 1980 were:
Already premiership players - Keane, Bourke, Wood, Cloke & Bartlett.
(Yes, 5 of the 20 were already experienced premiership players.)
Those who'd make it but didn't have premiership experience were:
Malthouse, Jess, Raines, Monteath & Dunne.
At that stage, the experienced players in 1977, that would play in 1980, had played:
Bartlett, 274 games, 461 goals
Bourke, 228 games, 51 goals
Wood, 125 games, 53 goals
Keane, 107 games, 2 goals
Cloke, 79 games, 51 goals
Of the newer boys:
Malthouse, 75 games, 13 goals
Monteath, 52 games, 81 goals
Jess, 26 games, 25 goals
Raines, 25 games, 13 goals
Dunne, 17 games, 18 goals
Some of the other data from that season:
Highest goalkicker - Kevin Bartlett, 55 goals
H&A For: 344 goals, 306 behinds, Ave (for 22 games): 16 goals, 14 behinds
H&A Agst: 299 goals, 291 behinds, Ave: 14 goals, 14 behinds
Total Century scores: For-15, Agst-11
These were the days when Footy Records had something to say.
So the 1977 could get into the finals, but didn't have enough to win a premiership.
As you know, at that time premiership expectations were high, and that meant new blood was needed.
Interesting also to take note of those of 1977 that didn't make it:
1. Balme 25yo - went to SA, after a bad knee, coached Norwood to 2 SANFL premierships.
2. Jenkinson - traded to South at 22yo, retired at 24yo
3. Pitura & Noonan - both duds from other clubs.
4. Cam Clayton - premiership player at 17yo, traded to Melb at 21yo, traded to Dons at 26yo, retired at 28yo.
5. Nifty Roberts - went back to West Torrens at 23yo, played in SANFL till 1987, 32yo, playing in 2 SANFL premierships. (Matty Rogers reminded me very much of him.)
6. Butch Edwards - a prelim at 18yo, went to the Pies a shadow of his former self at 22yo.
Stay tuned to 1978. Same bat-time, same bat-channel.
