Another footballer bashed

About 6 or 7 weeks ago I was walking past a popular nightclub in my area. The security out the front were (as is typical) a shady, sleazy looking couple of blokes. Standing with them were a bunch of equally slimy and shallow looking patrons i.e. all looking the same with the same muscle shirts…the same Woody Woodpecker haircuts…the same tacky tattoos…the same corny little stud earrings etc. There were about another 5 or 6 other groups all standing around and again….they all looked exactly the same. I thought to myself the place inside would just be an infestation of trouble, not that it worried me coz I don’t go to nightclubs.

But suffice to say about two weeks later a massive brawl erupted forcing all 400 patrons outside into the street. There were stabbings and mass arrests….the works.

There’s probably nothing unexpected about the above, but the problem is, every second nightclub you walk past seems to have the same seedy atmosphere about it nowadays and unfortunately the disease is now spreading into a lot of once pretty sound and safe pubs/ bars as well.

Besides drugs and society and legal issues, I also reckon the owners of a lot of places have a fair bit to answer for in terms of the people they let in, the number of people they let in (i.e. overcrowding) and most importantly the general atmosphere that they let develop.

As an example, there’s a pub in my area which has been a mega popular institution for many years. Its was a very sound place to go and have a beer in, watch footy, stay in until the late hours and do so with a great mix of locals and drop ins that knew the character of the place. Great friendly atmosphere with no problems whatsoever. Not once did the place ever have any security working, nor did it ever have the need to. However, it changed hands recently and despite it being popular and profitable place, the new owners thought they could enhance it by introducing a heap of newer/younger staff, sticking up a heap of plasmas pumping out sh*t doof doof music etc. and trying to target a younger patronage. Needless to say, their sales volumes and overall patronage has halved, and now they have fights and security issues all the time as a result of a changed client profile. A complete shame.

Trying to find a decent pub or bar to have a beer in without a cowardly bunch of shallow punks acting like a holes - be they patrons or people who work there - is a very difficult task nowadays imo.

Yeah, your right pink-punchwagon it's a shame what they have done to the Hosies on Flinders Street.

i am not defending the guy but no-one gets bashed for no reason
Ridiculous comment coming from someone with such a sweet little avatar lids.

People do bashed for no reason regularly. Law of the jungle. People justifying it (not saying anyone on here is) or partially putting it down to people handling something wrong/being out in a position they can't win in...are just examples of society always having to put labels on things so they can feel comfortable with them.

If a man grabs your gf's breast....if three of them keep blocking the way your walking down a street while breathing alcohol fumes and worse down your gf's face...if they make vile comments about her as you pass...it is not always easy to "turn the other cheek". In fact doing so can incite a wolf pack if they sense fear or vulnrability. ON the other hand saying something back or using aggressive body language can also antagonise it. All depends on the situation and the everyday person is not built to handle hostile situations like this well. Most freeze up, some react verbally from fear, some run and some react physically. Most don't rationalise which they do, it just happens from instinct.

SOMETIMES you can ignore or handle it right...but the amount of times people get forced to be in a position that EVERYONE around knows how it well end, no matter how the victim handles it....is by far the majority.

Who cares if Waite was defending his gf's honour? People should be able to walk down a street without being accosted by wolf packs of drunks/drug users/thugs. The average person has very little chance of being able to get through such safely and questions of them "partially giving cause" is nonsense. They should not have been put in a no-win position in the first place.

This sort of thing did not happen to this extent years ago, fact. The fact there is so much gang/drunk/lout behaviour mixed in a society with decreasing values means there are always going to be innocents claimed by it.

Sources/causes/triggers don't justify or change the facts, that innocent people should not be being glassed, stabbed, bashed, raped whatever the case...because they were in the wrong time at the wrong place.

Those places and times are increasing.

Murders, home invasion type rapes, home robberies etc are decreasing. Assaults, sexual crimes in night spots/ on transport etc are increasing. Crime generally shows us trends in society.

Victims are not to to be blamed because of how they respond to predators (very rarely anyway). They simply should not be put in such situations.

People saying "Oh I saw him looking for trouble or he was asking for it" are talking about very small minorities in these incidents. No matter how many they personally seen.

I've offered up my two cents worth, not much more to say on the subject.

Have to disagree strongly with some of you.

Yeah, tend to agree with a lot of what Dyer is posting.

Have done club and personal security and was pleased to see an interview with the singer James Blunt in Rolling Stone. He gave examples of how photographers insult your girlfriend when you're out to provoke reaction to get the angry snap which pays much better than the normal happy snap.

The same thing is happening here, the thugs insult your GF to get you to lose control then they own the situation and exploit it to their advantage. They know whats coming and can attack or back off depending on your reaction and the evolving situation.

Having said all that, I remember going to the G a couple of years back and leaving the ground was shirt fronted by a guy just charging thru the crowd. My first reaction was to go into defense response mode when I realised he was trying to get a reaction so his mates following could jump in from the back. The worst thing about this was they were all wearing Tiger colours. So don't presume it's only at clubs or when drugs are involved.

The odd thing is you can go out in a place like Thailand and never feel threatened walking the streets. These sort of things are almost non existent, especially where foreigners are concerned. Certainly there are violent incidents that occur here, but very very rarely are they random and I think that a big part of that is that the Thai Police really come down on offenders who get involved in this sort of activity.

Certainly true gussie. Safe as houses here.
Reading this thread makes me sad however about what life's becoming in Oz.

We used to be a far more tolerant society more interested in a good time than causing trouble.
It seems that once unique Aussie trait is disappearing at a rate of knots.

I don't go out much back in Australia to nightspots as I'm in my mid thirties but with a young son growing up it makes me fearful for his future. :-\

My thoughts exactly oldie. We could learn a lot from Thai society in a lot of way.
