Was there any talk of Jackson Barling when you spoke to Mr Miller? What was his opinion? Is he a chance for the rookie list?

FYI.

Jackson Barling to West Adelaide, can anypne confirm this or is he staying at Willy?

Appears so,

So there's more money available in the SANFL than in the VFL.

I think I read the other day that Jeremy Humm is rookied at Richmond on less money than he could have got in the SANFL

Yeh, I heard somewhere that quite a few of the SANFL clubs have gotten into financial trouble buying up experienced fringe players.
And that they've got themselves back out of trouble by receiving big transfers when their juniors get picked up in the AFL draft.

Ahh, that's right, Greg said it.

This something the AFL must address if the VFL is to be the second best state comp in the country. The amount of Victorian players leaving to play WAFL & SANFL is almost staggering. Somehow the situation needs to be that if you want a 2nd chance at AFL you should play VFL not WAFL/SANFL. In one way this makes snese. We have 10 clubs here in Vic and if you stayed and played well in the VFL you have 10 clubs here ready to get you whereas in the other states there is only 2 clubs who really see you week in week out. Yes I know Vic clubs can draft from the SANFL/WAFL but you'd be better off if you performed well under the noses of 10 clubs that 2.

Good points.
The key to the problem seems to be in the transfer fee situation. A SANFL or WAFL club can earn $35K for each junior taken early in the ND. But the VFL don't have access to developing juniors because the TAC is separate from the VFL.
What I mean by this is that a SANFL club, like Westies, can develop 3 or 4 top class juniors in their Colts comp. If a couple of those juniors get picked up early, well that's $60-70K that they can spend on players like Barling.

The VFL doesn't have access to that. And until they do, well, the VFL will struggle. As for the standard of comps. The SANFL, WAFL & VFL all play against each other during the year. There's not alot of difference between them.

just on that, the reason SANFL clubs in particular have a large supply of funds to attract the best players outside the AFL is not receiving funds for drafting of players as Phantom suggests but their off-field revenue stream.

most of the SANFL clubs own large gaming hotels in SA, & earn huge sums of money from these...thus giving them the expendable cash to lure the top unlisted players from around the country...

My preference would be to have a leaning towards being more developmental down @ Coburg rather than giving hacks like Haynes etc . a run

Thanks Leysy,
What I posted was what I was told, but your post sounds very credible.
I know at Coburg the whole issue of gaining such a facility is crucial.
