Q1
The Tigers had come to play today with a very good attack on the ball and man. They also ran back well in defence and an emphasis on running it out of the backline with skill and drive and running support. In particular Bowden, Newman and Simmonds used the left wing and centre corridor nicely. West Coast were not paying us enough respect and not manning up. Tambling did especially well, showing pace, class and finishing. Schulz was making good position and marking strongly but not kicking goals. Simmonds, Tambling, Bowden, Foley, Newman, Raines all did well in the first quarter with our young guys Cleve, McGuane, Edwards and King all showing good attack, confidence and pace at the ball. Tigers up by 15 points at the first change– the Eagles missed some chances but we did too through the normally reliable Schulz. The Eagles goals nearly all came from tiger errors rather than good attacking play from Eagles. WCE were definitely not on their game and not showing enough respect – time would tell if Worsfold would get them to man up and be more accountable in the second. Tambling the main highlight of the first quarter with four goals - Schulz the lowlight with 3 straight behinds - but was at least making good position and marking strongly.

Q2
The Tiges started where they left off - after four consecutive ballups the ball broke to Pettifer who kicked long and Hughes took a nice strong mark over the back of the pack and converted the shot for goal. Then it all went pear shaped - the eagles were manning up better and stopping our run out the back line. They also flooded back much better and made it impossible for our forwards to convert their half chances. The Eagles running game got going and they started to convert chances through Lynch and others. Our backline was trying hard but with wave after wave of Eagle attacks they were stretched and started to make the inevitable mistakes. The umpires joined in the fun and came down hard on Richmond taggers with the Eagles getting some dubious free kicks, but it was still pretty much one way traffic this quarter. Again our players found it very hard to adapt to the Eagles change of tactics - we seemed much more hesitant and lacked any confidence. The Weagles turned a 15 point deficit to an 18 point lead by the half-time siren.

Whatever Wallet said at half-time worked because we came out with new vigour, purpose and attack on the ball again. After the game was scoreless in terms of goals for the first part of the quarter Deledio finally broke the deadlock with a superb 60 metre torpedo punt. The Eagles then manufactured a couple of goals through Lynch working hard and converting one beauty right from the boundary line outside the 50 metre arc. Despite the Eagles making the most of their chances we continued to fight hard with good run and carry from the kids and then another good goal from Cleve Hughes. Richo was working hard and Tivendale showing something - Polak was also becoming a stand-out down back, marking strongly and delivering well from the back line. The kids were the highlight though - Jake King, Deledio, Cleve Hughes and also Luke McGuane all backing their judgement and playing well. Raines was also starting to show the form of last year - breaking tackles and running and passing well out to half-forward. The sides broke even - two goals each - but could the Tigers be showing enough fight to snatch the game?

The Tigers came out again showing good fight and spirit but again skill errors were turning the ball over and costing us…. A costly goal to Hunter for eagles after defence stuffed up and no-one contested the mark. Nice play by Foley and Tuck got the ball to Pettifer who kicked the goal from a tight angle.
Another nice piece of fighting play by Simmo and Tivendale on the wing… the ball comes to Cleaver who kicks a huge 55 meter drop punt for a goal…. The Tiges were still in it and making a charge. The Eagles looked to lose their composure and the Tigers were running and hunting in packs... Could we do the impossible? Then two pivotal errors cost us. A great effort by Jake King saw him win a free kick - eagle holding the ball. He shanked the kick horribly. JON got the ball on the 50 metre arc - lacking confidence to shoot he chipped the ball into the forward pocket and the Eagles swept it out for a goal. The Tigers fought the quarter out really well but again all our efforts were in vain as we broke even in terms of goals again.

Although we lost this match I reckon most supporters would have been impressed with the spirit and run shown by the Tigers today - particular our younger brigade. Of the vets probably Richo and Bowden did the best - a slight improvement from KJ and the other veterans tried hard but it's obvious to all that the time to invest in youth is now. Gaspar tried hard but it looks like the game has passed him by - as soon as Hall/Thursfield are fit they need to take over his role. Tambling was shut down for the middle part of the game but broke free again towards the end - still needs to be a four quarter contributor so he can make the next step up. Polak was excellent in defence - strong hands, good disposal and a real physical presence. Maybe he needs to stay at CHB and we sort out the forward line without him. Of the kids Edwards showed skill, King showed heart, McGuane showed great high marking and good run but was ultimately outgunned by Hansen. Good learning experience for him. JON did not do much but showed ability.
Our 2-3 year players - Raines, Deledio, Tambling all looked as though they are starting to hit some sort of form again. Pettifer started to show a bit but still needs to do more - much more.
Coaching? Wallet was great in the first quarter - clearly outwitted Worsfold or at least the Weagle players, but this situation was completely reversed in the second. Did a better job in the second half although it really seemed to be a case of encouraging the youngsters to run run run and back themselves. As you would expect with a young group this paid dividends sometimes but cost us with turnovers and defensive errors as well.
I'd give the side 8/10 for effort, 5/10 for skill today.
It's not all doom and gloom folks - we won't make the finals but we will win some games and more importantly let's keep developing the kids.
Dishonorable mention to the umpires - the free kick count does not have to be even but the soft kicks they gave Eagles midfielders in particular were making me sick. Not the difference in the game but enough to make me very, very unhappy.
