PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

It all started in 1982 with the relocation of South Melbourne north to become the Sydney Swans.
1987 saw the introduction of the West Coast Eagles and the Brisbane Bears to the then VFL with Adelaide joining in 1991, Fremantle joining in 1995 and Port Adelaide in 1997.

Looking back since these teams introduction the only one that is not performing is Fremantle, (but then they have only been in the competition 10 years)
All the other teams have played in or won Grand Finals and have massive advantages when they play Victorian teams at their respective home grounds.

Brisbane have 3 consecutive flags
West Coast 2 flags (another this year to make 3).
Adelaide 2 flags (contenders again this year)
Port Adelaide 1 flag (not far from again being dominant)
Sydney 1 Grand Final (but having massive concessions, and always playing finals)
Fremantle, the only one without success but I'm positive it won't take long
Since 1987 these teams have won 8 out of the 18 flags on offer. That is 44% of flags on offer when they make up 37% of team numbers.

Since these teams have entered the VFL/AFL it would be fair to say that it has been to the demise of the Victorian teams,
Looking back to the 1990's West Coast and Adelaide won 2 flags each, and only Essendon (arguably the strongest Victorian club) has won a flag this decade with Brisbane and Port blitzing everyone else.
Again this year we see West Coast dominating with the likes of Adelaide being their only current real threat.
And after last weekends performances by Brisbane and Port it looks very much like they will have a great say in the make up of the final eight.

Where does that leave a team like Richmond?

Since these teams have come in to the comp we have been their "whipping boys" for want of a better term.
The only chance we have of beating any of these teams is at the "G" when they are having an "off" day.
At their home ground forget it. Anything under a 6 goal loss is "respectable".

What is it that we have to do to:
1. Compete with these teams
2. Dominate the competition

I believe our club has to put measures in place immediately to stop this "domination" by the "interstaters".
We are being left further and further behind by their ability to get 35-40,000 members at the drop of a hat, massive sponsorship deals and unfair home ground advantages (especially in finals).

Our administrators can begin by refusing to play home games at the dome and like Collingwood, play a majority of games in Melbourne because we are one of the best 2-3 drawing clubs in the AFL.

If things are not done now we will continue to wallow in our pathetic performances and continue to be the "bitches" for these interstate teams.
