PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

About this time last year, we were all marvelling at the new Prowess software that the Tigers had acquired.

Club80 members will remember the presentation that Brian Royal made to us last February about how the software worked and the great advantages that it gave to the Tiger coaching and playing staff during and after game time. At that point, the Tiges had caught up with the ruck of the 16 teams in the comp regarding its IT capability, although there were still some leading clubs still out in front.

12 months have passed since then, and 12 months is a long time in IT development.
There have been some real developments in AFL IT development in that time. Unfortunately, due to IT improvements that other AFL clubs have taken on, that we haven't, we are falling back again behind the ruck.

Just such a new development is Champion Data's Realtime Match Ups, which I am told is a big improvement on the Match Up software that we were using last season.

I know that it is not an easy decision. Football clubs are genrally ruled by politics rather than by logic. (At Tigerland we know this too well.) At the RFC, you can have one coach allied with Prowess versus another coach allied to Champion Data. In my mind the decision should always be based on:
1. The best advantage to the club at an affordable/reasonable cost.
2. The capability of the club to use or take the most advantage of that investment.
3. Politics should be left out.

I also know that Club80 intended its 2006 investment to be Mick McGuane, but Mick has turned his back on the Tiges to take on a bigger role at the Sainters.
I believe that Club80 are yet to decide on what the 2006 investment will now be.
In my mind that investment in IT in 2005 paid remarkable dividends as every coach agreed. A timely investment by Club80 into IT improvements for 2006 could not only consolidate the gains made in 2005 but bring the club to the forefront of AFL IT On-field technology.

Food for thought.

Again, Id be grateful for your thoughts.

Fudge, I know that you work for Champion Data. I know that you are also reticent in expressing your opinion because of perceived conflict of interest. But hey, we are the Tigers, we put the capital C, O & I into Conflict Of Interest. I'd be grateful if you could enlighten us on some the changes that have taken place.
