Are we in the same sort of trouble as the saints?

Strangely enough, that's probably the scenario at Tigerland.

Francis Jackson did it voluntarily in 2005, with the Club picking up expenses. A position was found for him in 2006.
Merv Keane worked voluntarily in 2006, was offered a paying role at Essendon for 2007, which the Tiges couldn't match.
There are a few part-timers being paid something.
And then there are the sucks like me who do what I can and strangely feel good about doing it. (Don't worry, I'm a bit tired today. Cricket season beginning & all.)

Phantom, with the drought and the effect on cricket grounds, you will have plenty of time to be pro-active for this year's draft and review possibilities for 2008 as well ;)

Which reminds me, I must get back to updating the WA stats.

You should never skimp on recruiting and development, regardless of your financial.

So by that reasoning Richmond should be spending as much as Collingwood do on recruitment and development even though our turnover is half what theirs is?

Glad your not running the club Harold.
jeez i get irked by (i wont say that) but will say fools who ignore and twist a perfectly reasonable comment into something it isnt. it really pisses me that you have to spell every little thing out for the anal retentive types.

collingwood spent over 500k on recruiting we have been spending a paltry 120k the least of any club in the comp by a big margin. less than the almost insolvent kangaroos carlton and melb less than everyone do you think thats good enough.

sheesh it pisses me that this has to be spelt out everyone should know this and everyman and his dog should be up in arms about this.
just for the record stkilda was the second worst club when it came to monies for recruiting. hence the title of the thread.

well done harry keep on pointing out the shocking way our club is run i wish there was a few like you running the show at the rabble footy club.

Look you can argue that you should never be in the position to have to skimp on recruiting and player development but if you are in the position where you don't have the cash then you can't spend it. Debt can only be run up if it can be serviced. If we ever went bankrupt we would be relocated by the AFL out of Victoria and/or amalgamated. There is a limit - look at the crash of Leeds Utd for example as a club that tried to buy its position in the Premier league and went under. The football department has undoubtedly had tough times but as Phantom points out, those restrictions are being progressively relaxed and management contributions are becoming more team based than personality based. The recent article on St Kilda on the Hun (rich boys club) is an absolute nightmare that Richmond has experienced and I hope never experiences again.

It seems to me that the difference between St Kilda and Richmond is that as soon as we have been back on a sound enough financial footing we've put resources back into the footy dept, which is obviously an ongoing process. St Kilda didn't do that, they've kept the costs too low well after they reached a sound financial footing.
