I played junior footy with Ash.

He was a great bloke but definitely not a standout player. You would have named 10 other guys from his junior teams that you would have thought would make AFL ahead of him.

He had to work his ring off to make it to AFL. His kicking was always a weakness but to do what he did was admirable. He ecked everything out of himself and left nothing in reserve.

Mmmmm... I wonder who One-eyed is...? I played a bit of junior footy with Ash as well and have the same recollections.

The big turning point for him was the growth spurt he went through when he was about 16/17. He went from being a skinny little runt playing off a HBF to this 6'2" solidly built AFL player. I remember bumping into him at VFL Park one day just after he played one of his first games and couldn't believe how he'd grown.
