I always think Kennett's mental health work is akin to Ray Kroc becoming a dietician.
Heaps of breaks and timeouts during the game to duck out and turn the BBQ chops.
You know it makes sense.
Victoria used to have Aust Day on the Monday closest to the 26th. That is why we were known as the land of the long wekend. And that was all it was a long weekend every year. Jingoism and reflection on our past was pretty low priority for me and my peers - Basketball tournaments or bushwalking. Perhaps others were ahead of the curve.
The bicentennial in 88 was probably the catylist for a unified day. And as Jeff was slashing public holidays like Show Day and the extra day if Anzac Day was on a weekend and the Tuesday Bank holiday after Easter he was definitely at the forefront of making 26 Jan the fixed holiday.
Ha ha it definitely was ....I used to think how incongruous it was for us to spend our national,holiday watching a game none of us had ever played and few ever seen live. always seemed to be that Monday until they extended the season by a week. And then there was always the Adelaide test match.
No idea, I'm just saying a bloke that caused as much harm to mental health as Kennett did has no business being involved in it.
Yeah, it was a harmless, laid-back day before the wreckers turned their sights on it.
Used to work in a bank around that time, but losing Show Day (which meant the Marlboro Cup/Show Day Cup at Caulfield to us) was the one that hurt as it sat in the long stretch from Queen's Birthday to Melbourne Cup Day.
Here is a 1989 article about it. Kennett is involved even then, but the bi-partisan push is coming from the feds.

Ask a teacher, nurse, copper, ambo, tram or train driver or any other public servant from his era and see how they feel. Not to mention all the families involved in the 350 odd public schools he shut down. Can't remember many other politicians whose name became an adjective for having your life ruined.
And he introduced Melbourne to the greatest social cancer in existence with a casino, the precinct of which has become an epicentre for suicide in Melbourne.

And didn’t the Wran government allow Sydney’s first casino? Do you see Wran as having caused the same mental health issues as Kennett?

Think pokies paved the way for the casino and pokies were introduced by Kirner who was desperately trying to salvage the state from bankruptcy caused by Cain. Hope you aren't letting Joan off the hook?

One theory I've heard is that Australia Day has no ritual or ceremony.
So I reckon Australia Day should be the culmination of Bush Week,
which is a 5 days public holiday in the middle of the year,
and everything in dan Murphys is free if you wear ugg boots.
and we build Gina Rhinehart and Clive Palmer effigies
and Gina ritually buggers Clive in a symbolic field of really tall poppies.
while we get pissed and fall asleep in the back of a ute
and when you wake up, you set a billy over a fire of treated pine kindling pulled off Chep pallets, and scratch your balls or tits and eat a stale lamington (these are traditionally made on the first day of bush week and left in the back of the fridge) until it boils.
kids could make the long stemmed poppies at school
