If any opposition listened to Dimma in the post match press conference - they would come away very afraid. We are not going away...

3 flags in 4 years has the team in the conversation with the greats.

To claim 4 in 5 years, including 3 in a row would have the team in the conversation as the greatest.

To claim 5 in 6 years, including 4 in a row would be indisputably the greatest ever.

Most of our side is young enough to be realistically capable of another 2 seasons of contention, and the opportunity to attract top quality free agents if required will be there.

It is really just a question of motivation and the luck of the footy gods with injury.

1967 = Premiership + 50 years = 2017 = Premiership

1969 = Premiership + 50 years = 2019 = Premiership

1920 = Premiership + 100 years = 2020 = Premiership

1921 = Premiership + 100 years = 2021 = ?

1973 = Premiership + 50 years = 2023 = ?

1974 = Premiership + 50 years = 2024 = ?

The main question is can we do one better fifty years after 1972 when we were runners up?

The force is strong in this one.

Flag totals go back to 1897 but of course the RFC was only admitted to the VFL in 1908.

Flag count since then reads
14- Ess Carl
13- RFC, Coll, Haw,
9 - Gee, Mel
Also rans all 5 or fewer

If we want be generous since 1925 when VFL expanded to 12 teams
13 - Haw
11 - RFC, Carl
10 - Ess, Coll
9 - Mel, Gee

Both look good to me.

I want to do some stats on success percentage which would take into account years in comp and number of Other teams. I expect hawthorn and west coast would be on top and we would maybe be third.

What is even more amazing with Hawthorn is how woeful they were for decades after joining the VFL in 1925. When I was born Hawthorn had 1 flag, we had 5. They have 12 in my lifetime, we now have 8 and I doubt there are any other teams close. Collingwood have 2 :D . Damn, Carlton have 8 in my lifetime too, but Essendon 4.

Yeah, I was just talking with a mate how Hawthorn have won 12 between 1971-2015 (44 years) plus 5 runners up. And another 12 seasons of finals appearances. So 29 out of 44 years in the finals. Bastards.

Hahaha, it's just absurd that we're having these discussions when four years ago there was no end in sight!

If you are going to include VFL flags then maybe you have to include WAFL and SANFL flags for Port and Freo before they entered the AFL.
