Back to the Future

The club has to look at turning over 10 plus players for at least the next 3 years, then you should have built up a nucleus of half decent players. You'll have a very young side, but hopefully a very talented one at the same time. After 2 more years of development you should have a combination of talented experience and talented youth. That's when you start the climb up the ladder.
At the end of this season I'd look at offloading: Raines (may still be worth something in trade), Simmonds, Polak, Brown, Bowden, McMahon (stuff the contract, pay it out, what good is he if he's playing for Coburg anyway?), Pettifer, McGuane (tradeable), Oakley-Nicholls, Schulz, Hislop, Johnson and King. That should do it for a start, give a few players a year to prove themselves under the new coach, but let them know that they'll be out the door unless they perform. That list would include the likes of: Edwards, Polo, Putt, Pattison, Hughes and Connors. By that time Cousins and Richo would also be retiring. It's hard, but it's the only way, it's why the club need to hire a real hard bugger as the next coach, someone who doesn't really care what toes he steps on or how loudly supporters cry about certain players. 3 year contract to be reviewed at the end of it. Specify that wins are not what is being looked at, future development and consistent improvement is. Part of Wallace's problem is that he coaches for the now and always has, won't take a hit now even if it looks like paying off in the future, hence his recruiting of stop gap players like Graham and Kingsley. I'd include McMahon in that too, but Wallace seems to think he's a match winner.

Whatever we do we must not give another 5 year contract. 3 years maximum then re-asses based on the direction he is taking us.

Agree. 3 years is fair and we need to back the new coach to the hilt as long as he focuses on developing the young players on the list; similar to what Clarkson did. That's a fair deal for any coach and if he does this I believe he'll get the support of all and sundry (as long as it's not Campbell).

Unless those at the pointy end help the development of the young players in there area of the ground.

ILO Richo & Cousins both do this.

There's also plenty to go without sacrificing anything by keeping them.

Yep. I think Bowden can go around again but I would be not that upset if he get marching orders.

Agree Leysy, I'd keep Richo and Cousins as they assist development of our youth.

the other factor favouring both richo and jb is they are on the vets list. i dont think any other tiger is eligible, so if they were to go they would be replaced by rookie draft picks.

Bowden's game was average/poor the other night.

Regularly lead to the ball by younger opponents and struggled with chasing and second efforts.

Joel's still smart enough to get to the right places but he's slowing down and making more mistakes this year than I've seen at his best. He's a long way from that.

We need to develop youth on the half back line. He's now holding youngsters back IMO.

This should definitely be his last season and I would Gaspar him for the rest of the year until his farewell game.

Over the next two years, one way or another, these players have to be gone:

Bowden, Brown, Cousins, Edwards, Hughes, Johnson, King, McMahon, JON, Pattison, Pettifer, Polak, Raines, Richo, Schulz, Simmonds, White, Sylvester.

If we can upgrade McGuane, Jackson, Newman and Polo, then they can be shown the door as well.

The future just aint what it used to be.

You got me thinking freezer.

Mostly I agree. Remembering you say 2 years, but I'll break it down

Take out the vets, Bowden, Brown, Johnson, Cousins, Richo, Simmons

I'm not the new coach obviously, but Johnson, Bowden, Simmonds and possibly Brown gone years end, Richo and Cousins, barring injury, gone end 2010 Fair enough

Of the rest of your gone list, I'd take out white and put him with Jackson and Polo as players who are steadily improving. I reckon they may well improve to the level where they can play a role in a good side, probably won't be superstars, but signs are Ok Newman is a decent player. McGuane may well move to gone list.

Bowden, Brown, Hughes, Johnson, King, McMahon, Pattison, Pettifer, Polak, Raines, Schulz, Simmonds,(leave rookie sly out)

Minimum 8, hopefully 10 of these gone years end

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the lists people were making on PRE, me included) were 2 and 3 times as long post Spud. Also remember, Hawforn, Geel, and St K were looking very half arsed and crap 2-3 years before threatening.

ToO, Good Lord. Have a look at the matchup. Angus Monfries gave Luke Hodge a touch up the week before as a lead up footballer.

These types have given Bowden fits over the years. Paul Medhurst anyone? What the hell was he doing on him? Poor match up. Should have went to one of the talls or been pushed forward. Bowden has to be matched up tall not small. Cooled off Tredrea the week before and hurt him going the other way. He can play around giving away cms and kgs but not pace. Wallace is yet to learn this.

As for his year thus far, it has been more then serviceable. His ball use has been good, moves it forward a lot more. Lot more attacking. If we Gaspar him, how is going to take his spot? Who is he holding back? Moore and McGuane have struggled the last month, Thrusfield needs to replace one of them and I think Joel needs to get the other tall role and release Moore as a attacking half back. Moore needs to do much more on the rebound, putting him in Joel’s role will allow him.

Joel Bowden is the easy option to point the finger at. Don’t forget he was instrumental in holding the club together last week and is one of the few who has the club’s best interest at heart. The question marks should be getting pointed at the many others first. I actually think the club should have went with Bowden and Richardson as co-captains in 2009 to fill the breach because clearly Newman is not ready for the job yet.

You make a good case scooper. I agree. His class stands out like you-know-whats at the moment, even when he has a poor game by his high standards.

We'll agree to disagree. He's as slow as a wet week and I will be amazed if he plays on next season.

he has slowed down, and to play on next year would be one too many. But for now, he remains one of our best and one of very few players with class.

He's not that classy atm TS.
I watched Joel very closely on the replay and he's making quite a few errors by hand and foot.
Most concerning though is he is falling off contests when the ball hits the ground and younger quicker players are leaving him in their wake.
He gives up the chase quicker than most and still struggles as ever with the one percenters.
God help us if he's still our best option at fb. :help

As for who should replace him? Anyone of Post, Rance or Thursfield.
Winning games is not the issue now. We need to offer Joel's games to younger players.

I don't disagree that much. I agree he's in decline, but I guess the point I'm making is a JB in decline, in his final year, is still one of our best. Gawd help us indeed.
