Basic Footy Team Rules

One thing that really stands out to me is that we do not do the basic team footy things well. Some examples of this include:-

  • Talk - Sitting at close to fence level at some games this year, it is very noticeable that the players do not seem to talk much to each other. A
  • Support - I hardly ever notice richmond small forwards providing a shield to give the leading forward a small (but important) break from the defender. Our leading forwards always have their opponents sitting right on the shoulder on a lead.
  • Marking- I cant believe the number of times i have seen opposition defenders getting a fist to the ball when our players have tried to mark the ball on their chest. I was always taught to mark out in front? Against the Bulldogs, i saw Riewoldt and Morton have chest mark attempts spoiled a couple of times when they would have most likely marked it if they had tried to take them out in front.

To me, these are examples of the simple things that must come back into the team before any great progress can be made.

Good stuff TigerSkills, I would like to add the good old sheperd back into this team, too many times I have seen *smile* weak support given to the ball carrier.

I agree GPB. I remember against the Lions a few weeks back, Newman handballed to Deledio who only had one lions defender between him (at D50) and the forward line. Instead of getting across and shepherding so that our best ball user could carry it 30m and ick deep forward, he peeled off for a handball, we turned it over and the Lions kicked a goal. I know this is only one example, but i have seen it many times this year - we just do not protect the good ball users - everyone peels off for an easy possession.

We do not protect the ball carrier because we have too many who are lazy, selfish individuals earning easy money out there. They all know the basics of football and what is required of them out on the ground, if only we had good depth in our playing list I would bet these lazy, selfish types will step up a cog.

Become a TEAM, do EVERYTHING in your power to lift the team.
Look at the way the pussies play, it is ALL about the TEAM.

A new game plan that doesn't demand zoning off for a receive will dramatically raise the protection given to the ball carrier. One can only hope that the zone off went west with Wallace.

Selfish

Think we have been more a SIDE than a TEAM this year.

Great stuff. Can you do one for McMahon & Pettifer?

Agreed. Most poisonous aspect of our team. They don't play for each other when they don't have the ball in their hands.
Some of our 'leaders' are the worst culprits.
