I would like to again raise the issue of the idea of the benchmark player at Richmond – who is it that all players should aspire to be equal to or better than if we are going to be a serious premiership contender?

My player that represents a minimum standard is still Chris Newman (as it was last year). I would contend that in a champion team – including the bench - no one should be below his standards in footy nous, skills, athleticism and courage.

So that would mean that in the ideal team Newman would rate as the equal 22nd best player in the squad (or the last chosen every week).

So, who in our current crop of players that have senior experience rates above him? This is my list:

1. Richardson
2. Brown
3. Simmonds
4. J Bowden
5. Tuck
6. Johnson
7. Deledio
8. Coughlan
9. Pettifer
10. Hyde

11. Newman

So Newman rates number 11 – exactly in the middle.

It is likely that in the next 12 months that a number of players will move past him – Tambling, P Bowden, Foley and possibly Meyer, Jackson, Hughes and hopefully Thursfield. That would leave him between 14-18 on the list and we would still be 4 - 7 players short of premiership in 2007.

That’s my reckoning anyway.

TITN, as much as I am a fan of both Hyde & Pettifer, I think you have lost the plot a bit to rate them both ahead of Newman when it comes to skill level & football nous. Newman is one of our more creative players & his skills in using the footy are excellent. I think you sell the boy short! ;)

7. Deledio

As much as I like Lids I seriously think we overrate him a little bit. Personally wouldn't have him in this list at the moment. He is still learning the game and I feel has much to prove before we rate him as a player that has met our base standard. OK he won the rising star but what does that really mean. Only that he has shown a lot of promise and was consistent in his first year. He has yet to break a game apart. IMO I would have him down with Tambo and the other 2004 draftees, knocking on the door maybe, the most exciting of the group maybe, most likely to make it maybe, but not there yet and certainly not above Coggs.

Agree.
Newman gets the job done each week with minimum fuss or fanfare. Highly skilled player.
Id put him ahead of Hyde, Petiffer, Deledio(at this stage) and even Johnson.
My 10 would go something like this

1. Brown ?
2. Richardson
3. Tuck
4. J Bowden
5. M Coughlan
6. T Simmonds
7. C Newman
8. B Deledio
9. K Johnson
10. A Raines

Newman is the best user of the ball by foot at the club. Unrealistic to have him as the benchmark player

I think Newmo is far above a benchmark player. Would have him, Cogs and Hyde all higher. Agree with RROFO about Lids. As great as his season was last year he still didn't finish top 10 in our b&f. He's right up there on potential though.

You could certainly make good arguments that Hyde, Pettifer and Deledio all rate below Newman as players at this stage. But would you shift the benchmark?

If you rate Newman higher, then is Hyde the acceptable minimum standard player? Or Pettifer? Or do you keep Newman as the standard and admit that we have further to go than at first projected?

I would love to think Newman is the standard sure. I just think he was undervalued in your list.

I think someone put it best when they said the day Chris Newman is struggling for a spot in our 22 we'll likely be a premiership side.

I know you admire Chris Newman TITN, but I think it's a bit harsh to imagine that other players would pass him. Chris is not 24 years old yet and we should think that he has another 2-3 years to still blossom. What makes you say that he cannot blossom further, let's not forget under TW's first year he found more confidence, as did the selectors of last year's International Rules to pick him in the squad.

Interestingly Newman said in a recent article he thought he had plenty improvement left in his game.
He's already got a lot of the tools most players in the side don't, wouldn't surprise me at all if he improved further with experience.

by the time we are ready for a tilt at a flag 4 or 5 of the above wont be around due to age and another 2 should be traded delisted.

Is he in the Buckley class though :hihi :rotfl

Not in the Buckley class at all. Chris actually picks the right option and hits targets :hihi :rofl
