PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

I would like to again raise the issue of the idea of the benchmark player at Richmond – who is it that all players should aspire to be equal to or better than if we are going to be a serious premiership contender?

My player that represents a minimum standard is still Chris Newman (as it was last year). I would contend that in a champion team – including the bench - no one should be below his standards in footy nous, skills, athleticism and courage.

So that would mean that in the ideal team Newman would rate as the equal 22nd best player in the squad (or the last chosen every week).

So, who in our current crop of players that have senior experience rates above him? This is my list:

1. Richardson
2. Brown
3. Simmonds
4. J Bowden
5. Tuck
6. Johnson
7. Deledio
8. Coughlan
9. Pettifer
10. Hyde

11. Newman

So Newman rates number 11 – exactly in the middle.

It is likely that in the next 12 months that a number of players will move past him – Tambling, P Bowden, Foley and possibly Meyer, Jackson, Hughes and hopefully Thursfield. That would leave him between 14-18 on the list and we would still be 4 - 7 players short of premiership in 2007.

That’s my reckoning anyway.
