Best call from the outer

I am pretty sure that the bloke that yelled that out to JON never played football. It never ceases to amaze me how these "arm chair superstars" will spend their weekends attending a football game only to belittle a 20 year old kid who is a member of his own team. Just being out there is an achievement in its self is it not?

I see the crap at local footy each week, the big men over the other side of the fence love to drink cans and hurl abuse at the players. If you don't like what you are seeing go and buy the 1980 premiership DVD and sit at home and watch it.

That's absolute BS. We supporters are pouring our money in to at least see some sort of value from this club. If the club wants members to sign up they simply cannot continue to put in performances like that with mistakes from the same players all the time. Either our recruiting is a disgrace or we simply do not have the right coaches in place to get the best out of these kids. Either way, after 35 years of supporting this club Im getting fed up.

JON was always going to be a project, yet after three seasons the kid should be delisted?
How is the kid supposed to gain confidence when his own supporters rip him to shreds....because it is amusing?
If you don't like to pay your hard earn to see kids trying to develop, take your support and go jump on the Geelong bandwagon, that way you will all find better things to talk about than a 20 year old that is struggling to find his feet at the moment.

More absolute BS. You don't select "project players" at pick no 8. These types go after pick 50. Honestly, the sooner we stop tippy toeing around those responsible for our recruiting (you listening Greg Miller?) the sooner we can have the decision makers find people who have an eye for talent.

i was sitting there in the last quarter watching another oakley-nicholls turnover when some bloke behind me screams out

"take yourself off jarryd"

it made my night

I must have been sitting close to you Lids cos I heard the same guy!!

Unless many other supporters around the ground said the same thing (which wouldnt surprise me)!!

I thought JON's game was really mixed. Don't know how many possessions he got, but saw him use some of them really well; accurate kicks, and a bit of run as well. He also looked like he had muscled up a bit.

Then there were the panic attacks--tried to do too much, got caught, turned it over.

Given how much AFL footy he's played, I'm not worried yet. Andrew Raines is a far bigger worry, but even he seemed to get a bit of aggression and confidence back later in the game. And Tucky!!

JON will either get some composure and judgment in the next year or two, or he'll be gone. I'm still hoping.

You can take one at dp8 if you have an exceptional team already...which sadly we didn't.

ToO ur on fire at the moment..... 100% correct...a team like the Eagles would draft someone likfe JOn and you wouldnt see or hear about him for 4 years..then when an opening comes bang in he comes ready for senior footy...and everyone is going wow look how good this kid is etc...thats what depth does for a club. Specualtive draft picks for a wooden spooner is a big NO NO especially at pick 8....geez thats as bad as it gets.

hff at the coventry end city side

i was the one calling him the lawnmower man all night

i don`t mind the odd call of abuse towards our players, because it`s so frustrating paying your membership fees every year and watching crap, but i can`t stand people who continually bag players non stop the entire game like the *smile* who was sat near me all night.
this mental defective spent the entire game bagging pettifer.
anyone who does this is nothing but a *smile*.

i thought JON looked terrible but he had 8 touches in the last quarter.
i wouldn`t write him off just yet but the signs don`t look good.

I think Terry Wallace must have had a fair amount of input in the JON selection.
No doubt we overachieved in his first season as coach and he overrated the list because of it.
JON was the cream on Wallace's cake. :spin

We're suffering now. Oh well..

in the end what are we really missing???

true footballers, guys with hardness and footy smarts

we have enough "athletes"

get some footballers

If you take out Murphy, Thomas and Pendlebury (and maybe a couple of others) the 2005 draft was a bad year. I wonder if Hawthorn supporters are posting threads about how terrible their draft was considering they had two picks (3 and 6)higher than Richmond and took Dowler and Ellis who have played 20 games between them, I think not.

Drafting is an inexact science because you are not only drafting on the current ability of the player but you are also trying to project what the player will be in the future using the tools avaible to gauge him (size, speed, agilty, leap, skills, ect.) Unfortunately some players do not improve and flourish into what the recruiters had thought.

Had he not been picked at 8 he would have been Sipthorped over a year ago. A case of Miller and Wallace avoiding egg on their face.

I still recall the comparison being made over here in the West when he was drafted between JON and a young Peter Matera.

I shakes me head.

peter matera didnt spend to much time in the backline. Mayb the poor kid is just lost in the backline...
i dunno clutching at straws already!
I watched him line up in the first quarter in the backline on milne and all i can say is mr milne must smell really bad cos never got within 10 meters of him! he has no idea how to play down back! Maybe try him up forward cos he aint got a clue how to play anywhere alse!
