Best Grand Final?

Another vote from me for 89 Granny - I'd watch it again and again. Apart from Richmong Grand Finals (even 82 :'(), it's the only one I could watch again and again. As has been said - it had everything - even a great set of footy callers!

Did enjoy Leaping's mark in the final seconds. He covered 15-20 metres to be in the contest too - shades of Royce Hart floating across the pack!

Lesson in life is that it's not where you start, but where you finish.

Eddie can come and sit with me, anytime.

Back that up 100% Phanto. Seems to be the nature of things to knockem down till you can't no more, them enbrace em as our best. Eddie's day will arrive like our other tall poppies who have endured and succeeded. It's a hellova a tough way to be recognised - but hey, this is Australia ;)

The best grand final or finals would have to be when Scumwood get beaten, especially 1980. Oh! the good ole day's.

It was a very very ordinary match, the only thing that has people raving is that it was close, at least ten sides would've whipped both of them on Saturday and we may well have been one of them. It looked closer to rugby union than AFL. Just push it forward and hope you get a break go your way, i hope this is not the way the game is headed. I'm with most people 89 was great but I also think 97 was a pretty good game, even 2001 when Brisbane got their first it was a decent match for 3 & 1/2 quarters.

No way. The Saints, Crows and Cats had their chance to beat them and couldn't. Don't get fooled by the scrappy game, the pressure was intense. They were legitimate grand finalists.

Another great grand final that I saw as a boy.

1971 - Haw d StK

This was such a rugged battle.

Barry Lawrence pulled Hudson's ear almost completely off early in the game. There were crunches everywhere, with StKilda holding a lead at 3 qtr time.

In one of the most underrated efforts in the history of football, John Kennedy moved Hudson to HF, and moved Bob Keddie to FF. I recall Keddie kicked 4 goals in the last qtr to snatch Hawthorn the game.

It was also famous for Hudson needing to kick his 151st goal to break Bob Pratt's record for a season. In the last quarter Hudson kicked into the man on the mark, Lawrence, and later ran into an open goal to kick the ball out on the full. In retrospect he was clearly suffering from concussion after Lawrence's earlier hit on him.

Two tough teams and a tough result.

2nd worst GF in my memory.

Only beaten by the 1990 GF where Collingwood got up. A dark day indeed.

I have never forgiven Essendon for letting the Scum win.

:hihi

Damn that Peter Sumich(spelling), if he had kicked straight!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!The pies would still be waiting for the cup.......

would have loved to watch that but i would have been still in nappies so i could not have watched that , i did watch all the ones in the 80's on tv thou :spin

Two and a bit pages of postings on great grand finals and no mention of 1970?
Didn't this get voted the game of the century or something?
Classic Collingwood Choke. What more could you want? OK, so Carlton won it, but surely seeing the scum go down like that more than made up for that.

Never a big fan of 89. Not close enough. It was 6 points in the end but I was there and never once in that last quarter did I think Geelong could win it.

For one out of left field I always liked 1993. Not close, but one of the more exhilirating with a very youthful bummers side.

1980 was my favourite for obvious reasons :cutelaugh ;D :spin :clap

Of the others, two really stand out in my memory. 1989 was just unbelievable; probably the best game of footy I've ever seen. Hard, tough, fast, skilful, superstars all round. Say what you like about Dermie (and I reckon he's the greatest wanker of a commentator ever) but geez he was a great footballer. Played the toughest position on the ground and played it hard. To pick himself up from the deck after that blindside poleaxing from Yeates and take an overhead mark and kick a goal minutes later was legendary stuff. As was Dipper with a punctured lung, Ablett just unbelievable; what a game!

The other was when I was pretty young but I do remember the 1978 Hawthorn v North GF with Peter Knights and Snake Baker taking speccies all day. That was a great game as well.

1977 was good (until Twiggy kicked that goal) :hihi
